Celebrating strong role models & Black History Month

Donovan Buckley is a senior engineer for GE Research but his first experience with STEM came early. Growing up in Jamaica, Donovan’s grandfather owned a bicycle shop and young Donovan took a special interest in dissecting and assembling bicycle components to learn how they work.

Over the years, Donovan’s thirst for science and technology grew; he pursued an education in engineering and joined GE in 2010. Today, he works on a few different projects; for digital manufacturing, he’s developing software that links design intent to manufacturing and inspection process knowledge. For additive manufacturing, he’s helping to create a CAD-to-path software toolkit that automatically deconstructs complex 3D models into smaller sub-models and generates toolpath for multi-axis machine tools and robots.

Donovan is a member of the African American Forum (AAF), a GE affinity network designed to strengthen African American employees at GE through professional development, career management, and mentoring. In the below video, Donovan reflects on the importance of strong black role models, the impact that GE Research’s AAF chapter has had, and his belief that we all contribute differently.

Later this year, Donovan will celebrate 10 years with GE Research. When asked why he likes working at GE, Donovan said, “I enjoy the opportunity to work with and learn from some of the smartest and interesting professionals. Together we can solve some of the most challenging problems in manufacturing.”
