Edison Engineering Development Program

Are you just beginning your technical career? Are you passionate about engineering and technology? Then the Edison Engineering Development Program (EEDP) at GE Global Research in Niskayuna may be the right program for you.

EEDP "Edisons" receive broad job exposure through rotational assignments as they actively contribute to various technical projects. Experienced technical managers will mentor your work, and you'll participate in leadership and technical training.

The EEDP is for technical degree holders who are passionate about science or engineering and are committed to technical excellence. This program allows you to receive a master's degree while working full-time at GE's Global Research Center and to experience different fields of engineering ranging from nanotechnology to microturbines in multidisciplinary groups. You will also learn how GE Global Research approaches the design of products and the analysis of alternatives. Core engineering skills gained through challenging assignments will be further fine-tuned through technical and leadership skills training. Combined with the mentoring and counseling that you will receive from assignment managers, the EEDP experience will prepare you with the technical skills and values you need to make the most of your engineering career.

Requirements:
  • Four-year technical degree with demonstrated academic excellence (class ranking in top quartile; minimum 3.0 GPA)
  • "Passion" for engineering and quality workmanship
  • Strong technical aptitude and an analytic approach to problem solving
  • Previous employment/intern/co-op experience in an engineering-related field (desired, not required)
  • Strong commitment to a career in technology
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Self-confident team player with a competitive spirit to excel
Program Design

In taking on challenging assignments, you will learn to work closely with diverse teams to conduct leading-edge research. The EEDP experience offers exposure to high-level management and cross-functional interaction. The assignments become increasingly challenging as the program members gain experience. Edisons complete a minimum of three rotations in two and a half to three years.

A Typical Assignment:

  • Has a unique set of responsibilities, tasks, work goals, and developmental goals
  • Is overseen by an assignment leader
  • Offers exposure to business leaders and visibility for accomplishments
  • Is reviewed at the mid-point and end
  • Is technical in focus and can be in a variety of areas

Your work will count because your contributions will affect real projects at the Center.

You can further your knowledge base in an area of your choice or seek broader technical exposure to new technologies or processes.

Classroom Learning Module

The core engineering skills gained in assignments are honed through the Advanced Courses in Engineering. GE Global Research provides an in-house "A Course" that you can take for graduate-level credit while you pursue your MS degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute or Georgia Tech. Later in the program, you will complete the “B Course,” which will teach you to generate ideas and bring them to fruition. You will also participate in leadership courses and become Six Sigma trained.

A Course: The "A" course is a two-semester, 32-week multidisciplinary course taught at the GE Global Research Center. There are more than 50 instructors for the course and more than 70 people contributing their time and expertise. RPI has officially approved the A Course for 6 hours of credit (3 credit hours per semester).

A Course currently consists of five separate modules (energy, aircraft, healthcare, lighting and infrastructure) where Edisons tackle technical problems while gaining a better understanding of the GE businesses. During each module, the Edisons work together to solve a multi-disciplinary problem, and they each work individually on a research paper for a topic they choose. The A Course introduces the Edisons to a variety of technical fields and experts and gives them a head start to understanding GE and our technology.

B Course: The theme of the B Course is “From Idea to Innovation.” The goal of the course is to teach the Edisons how to come up with an idea for a new project, product or enhancement based on knowledge of the business needs and an understanding of how to plan, scope and execute a project. Courses are given in the beginning to teach the Edisons about project management and to give them the current state-of-the-art in the businesses. The Edisons each complete an individual project as part of the course, with several milestones to be met along the way.

Crotonville Courses: All Edisons take two classes at Crotonville, the central leadership training facility for the company. Each class is a chance to learn new skills, meet peers from throughout the company and be introduced to some of the top leaders within GE.

Mentoring and Evaluations

You will be formally evaluated by your assignment managers twice each rotation: at mid-point and at the end of the assignment. Evaluations are based on completion of job requirements and the development of competencies.

You will receive an annual evaluation from the Edison leader, along with continuous informal feedback. You also will have access to the Research Center’s top mentors to help you with your career.

Career Planning

The training is topped off with career planning skills. Combined with the knowledge and experience gained during the program, you will learn career planning skills so you can direct your career as you see fit.
