Imaging Technologies is a multi-disciplinary and diverse organization with 170 people working on state-of-the-art technologies in the areas of Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Ultrasound, Digital X-ray, and Visualization and Computer Vision. As part of GE Global Research, members of the ImT team have unique access to the latest innovations on a wide range of research fronts such as nanotechnology and the biosciences. Since the invention of the modern medical X-ray tube in 1913 by GE scientist William Coolidge, GE has been the world's leader in the development of imaging technologies. In this role, ImT personnel have been instrumental in bringing out new generations of X-ray, CT, MR imagers along with specific groundbreaking developments such as digital X-ray detectors and digital ultrasound scanners. GE continues to be at the forefront of exciting breakthroughs in imaging, as we explore and develop new ways for clinicians to see inside the human body. In addition to purely imager related research, we are charting new technology frontiers in the emerging field of molecular imaging with our colleagues in the Biosciences organization. Our researchers are finding new ways to see beyond anatomy and to image cellular function. This work holds the potential of developing diagnostic methods for identifying diseases well before they manifest themselves via traditional symptoms or changes at the organ level. Our vision is for development of breakthrough technologies that shift the healthcare paradigm from 'see and treat' to 'predict and prevent.' Further, our scientists are exploring new applications beyond medical applications for imaging in both the security and industrial non-destructive testing spaces. The synergistic needs of both medical and non-medical applications gives ImT a unique and broad landscape in which to advance the state-of-the-art of imaging. The ImT team is enabling these types of breakthroughs by developing innovative technology that jointly optimizes image acquisition, image contrast agents, and automated image analysis to bring superior imaging solutions to GE customers.
