Railcars

Our history as a leader in the rail industry reflects our dedication to service, growth and innovation.

Overview

As an industry leader, we have helped our clients navigate a myriad industry changes such as the 1980 Staggers Act, which deregulated the railroad industry and stimulated competition, leading to technological advances and the creation of hundreds of new shortline and regional railroads. In turn, we have helped the industry establish new milestones: in 2000, Class I railroads moved the largest amount of freight ever - 1.47 trillion ton-miles.

Rail Services has grown with the industry, strengthening its reputation for innovation and vision along the way:

  • 1983 - GE Capital takes over management of North American Car. The new company becomes GE Capital Railcar Services.
  • 1986 - GE Capital purchases the assets of North American Car.
  • 1989 - GE Capital Railcar Services enters the per diem boxcar market, acquiring 15,000 cars from Brae Corporation.
  • 1992 - GE Capital Railcar Services reaches an agreement with Itel Rail for the rights to lease its fleet and use six of its repair shops. The newly combined fleet becomes the largest in the industry, with 140,000 railcars.
  • 1997 - GE Capital Railcar Services and ACF reach an agreement, resulting in GE's leasing of 36,000 cars, a major portion of the ACF fleet.
  • 2002 - GE Rail adds 150,000 assets of TIP Intermodal to its portfolio.
  • 2003 - Rail Services adopts the hedgehog concept, combining passions, economic drivers and best-in-the-world performance.
