| Brief History The company traces its beginnings to Thomas A. Edison, who established Edison Electric Light Company in 1878. In 1892, a merger of Edison General Electric Company and Thomson-Houston Electric Company created General Electric Company. GE is the only company listed in the Dow Jones Industrial Index today that was also included in the original index in 1896. | GE in Europe, the Middle East & Africa (EMEA) GE has been active in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), for more than 100 years and has its regional headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. In 2005, EMEA sales of $39 billion (more than half of total international revenues) represented an increase of over 24 per cent compared with 2003, across GE's activities in both the industrial and financial sectors. All 6 global GE businesses have a significant presence in the region. In June 2004, GE opened the European arm of its Global Research Centre in Munich, Germany.
