Solution’s impact on Nigeria:
In having the capacity to maintain Total’s equipment using only Nigerian field service engineers, GE and Total are playing their role in transferring and developing local skills. This achievement reaches beyond compliance with the present Nigerian local content development initiative by demonstrating GE’s commitment to customer satisfaction and developing local expertise in the countries it operates in. Qualified local expertise boosts customer efficiencies by reducing outage down-time and raising productivity through faster response time of GE’s in-country field service personnel.
On the back of this successful collaboration in Nigeria, GE’s engineers are supporting Total’s E&P fleet in their operations in Congo. Experiences and synergies of this nature boost efficiencies and drives human capacity development in Africa.
Total’s challenge:
Total Nigeria was warranted to develop local talent and expertise to be in line with the Nigerian Local Content Law, which mandates the development of local skills, technology transfer, use of local manpower and local manufacturing.
How we overcome the challenge:
GE’s Oil & Gas business was already providing Total with fuel maintenance services on its GE compression equipment using expatriate personnel. In the past two years the partnership has demonstrated how Total Nigeria can maintain customer equipment with local talent. Nigerian trainee field service engineers spent six to nine months undergoing training with GE Oil & Gas in France and Italy and now have the capabilities to efficiently and effectively perform their jobs.

Total Nigeria:
Total Nigeria, established in 1962 is a subsidiary of TOTAL, the fourth largest multi-national group worldwide. Total Nigeria distributes consumer petroleum products and has the country’s largest distribution network; largest market share at 15% and is among the best performers on the Nigerian Stock Exchange.
The oil and gas industry forms the pillar of the Nigerian economy and is a major contributor towards the country’s international standing. Total Nigeria, operating through Total Upstream has served the Nigerian hydrocarbons industry for nearly half a century in partnership with the Nigerian government, equity associations and private companies.
