Transelectrica Selects GE Technology in Major Substation Upgrade Program; Romanian and US Government Ministers Notified of Contract at Romanian Joint Commerce Meeting

Transelectrica Selects GE Technology in Major Substation Upgrade Program; Romanian and US Government Ministers Notified of Contract at Romanian Joint Commerce Meeting MOSCOW--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 11, 2003--GE Power Systems today announced a major contract with Transelectrica SA, the transmission grid operator of Romania, for 102 Remote Terminal Units (RTU) valued at EUR4.8 million.

The contract was recognized at a recent event in Romania attended by Mr. Dan Ioan Popescu, minister of Industry and Resources, US Assistant Secretary of Commerce Mr. William Lash and US Ambassador Mr. Michael Guest, GE reported at Russia Power Conference & Exhibition. The RTUs are to be installed at a number of 400KV transmission substations as part of a major SCADA and communications extension of facilities program. Once installed the new systems will bring a high level of automation to the substation operators, giving them greater control over managing the network and allowing them remote access to the network data.

It is also now possible to provide real time data to management, providing them with continuous, up to date information. Mr Razvan Purdila, director, Transelectrica SA commented, We were extremely impressed by the advanced technology offered by GE Power Systems and the quality of the products. This contract is part of a long-term upgrade program so it was important for us to work with a supplier who could give us the long-term commitment we require. GE has demonstrated a clear commitment to working closely with us now and in the future.

We are delighted to be working with Transelectrica on this project, said Dan Ionescu, GE regional executive for the Balkans, who was at the event where the contract was recognized. This latest contract places GE technology in a strategic position within the project and we are looking forward to working closely with Transelectrica in the future. They are a major customer for us in Romania and this reinforces GE's commitment to expanding our presence in this region and continuing to offer products and services which fit the Romanian economic requirements.
