--(BUSINESS WIRE)--GE Chairman & CEO Jeff Immelt, Astronaut Buzz Aldrin, Charlotte Panthers Stars Rodney Peete and Mushin Muhammad, and 500 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Elementary School Children Gather to Commemorate the 50th Anniversary of GE's LEXAN(R) Resin

What: What do CDs and DVDs, Buzz Aldrin's space visor, cell phones, the canopy of an F15, NFL football helmets, refrigerator crisper drawers and computer housings all have in common?

They have all been made out of a uniquely strong and versatile material called GE LEXAN(R) polycarbonate resin, and on Tuesday, April 22, 2003, General Electric, astronaut Buzz Aldrin, NFL Charlotte Panthers stars Rodney Peete and Mushin Muhammad, and more than 500 school children from five Charlotte-Mecklenburg elementary schools will gather to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the invention of LEXAN(R) resin.

Why: To celebrate the 50th birthday of LEXAN(R), GE is hosting an interactive Innovation Day event for more than 500 4th and

5th grade school children from:

-- Blythe Elementary in Charlotte

-- Druid Hills Elementary in Charlotte

-- Hickory Grove Elementary in Charlotte

-- Huntersville Elementary in Huntersville

-- Long Creek Elementary in Huntersville

The event will feature celebrities, interactive displays, educational activities, games and a LEXAN(R) product museum, and will highlight how innovation shapes our everyday lives.

As part of the event, GE will provide a $125,000 donation to the five schools on hand to support enhanced computer access, curriculum and teacher development.

Who: Jeff Immelt, Chairman and CEO of GE, and John Krenicki, President and CEO of GE Plastics, will be available for interviews, as will Dr. Wilhelmina Rembert, Chairperson of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education.

Also, more than 500 4th and 5th grade children from five Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools will be in attendance, along with a variety of celebrity figures, including astronaut Dr. Buzz Aldrin, Charlotte Panthers Rodney Peete and Mushin Muhammad, and Battlebots TerrorHurtz and KillerHurtz.
