GE in Myanmar

Myanmar presents an amazing opportunity for growth in ASEAN with a burgeoning population of 60 million--and growing--that lives on a land mass just under half the size of Indonesia.

GE began its operations in Myanmar in early 2012 and its immediacy has enabled it to tackle numerous short- and long-term challenges in various areas.

Along with its network of offices in Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, GE is able to provide products and services in the energy, oil and gas, healthcare, water, air and land transportation sectors, and financial services in the region and harness its best practices for implementation in Myanmar.

Curing

In September 2012, GE was selected to supply seven Computed Tomography (CT) systems to public hospitals in Myanmar through SEA Lion, its national distributor.

Two 128-slice Optima CT660 CT systems and five 16-slice BrightSpeed Elite CT systems are also slated to be delivered to public hospitals in Yangon, Mandalay, and other cities. These systems provide advanced diagnostic imaging capabilities with low dose radiation technology.

GE is proud to play a role in transforming Myanmar’s healthcare landscape to increase access to healthcare in urban and rural areas. With the installation of GE's advanced medical equipment across the country, more people will be able to enjoy better healthcare and receive accurate medical diagnoses.

Powering

GE’s aeroderivative gas turbine technology has been selected for an Independent Power Project in November 2012 to help meet Myanmar’s urgent electricity requirements. As Myanmar has an abundant supply of natural gas--Myanmar is a prime exporter of the commodity in the region--this resource is the key to the country’s energy future.

The newly-constructed natural gas-fired power plant facilities will enter service no later than the second quarter of 2013 and will produce about 100 megawatts to help meet Myanmar’s rapidly-growing power requirements.

The project further expands GE’s role in helping Myanmar develop its infrastructure to support a growing nation. In the course of this expansion, GE will supply two LM6000-PC Sprint aeroderivative gas turbine-generators and technical advisory services for the plant in Alhone Township, Yangon City, Myanmar.

Independent power producer TOYO Thai Power Corp in Singapore (TTPSG) is the owner and operator of the plant and it will sell the power to Myanmar’s Ministry of Electric Power. Besides natural gas, Myanmar also has an abundant supply of hydropower which can be tapped for power generation and oil and gas exploration. Due to the availability of natural gas, GE expects that gas-fired combined-cycle projects will play an increasingly-important role in increasing Myanmar’s power supply to support the country’s national development.

Myanmar Government is planning to add 500 megawatts of gas-based energy production as an initiative to double its national electricity capacity by 2015. Currently, more than 20 percent of the country’s installed capacity is natural gas-based power generation.

GE’s portfolio of innovative distributed power solutions gives businesses and communities around the world access to reliable and efficiently-generated power using a variety of fuels that are on or off the grid. These solutions include GE aeroderivative gas turbines, Jenbacher and Waukesha gas engines, and Clean Cycle waste heat recovery solutions.

Moving

GECAS has leased two Embraer E190s airplanes to Myanmar Airways International (MAI), the country’s flagship carrier. MAI first flew in January 2011 using these modern, fuel-efficient aircraft powered by GE’s CF34-10E engines.
