Their comprehensive model for the development of a village is one that can be applied to any village and not just the one that they studied. The village they studied faced the common problem of poor sanitation, large scale use of firewood and frequent power cuts. Their solution for power generation involved gasifying dehusked paddy and distribute the power generated through the innovative concept of the AC coupled microgrid. Providing an idea for the construction of community toilets keeping in mind the village dynamics and also using the waste generated to produce bio gas and distribute it using balloon canisters succeeded in solving both the issue of excess firewood use and of sanitation. They called themselves the 'Fasttrack Developers' and made sure they were on the fast track to victory right from the start. Vasuki Prasad, Rupan Sarkar, Rahul Sharma, Gaurav Barman and Pranab Purkayastha, the highly energized and passionate team from MIT, Manipal wowed the judges and audience alike with their presentation on Train Informatics to emerge the winners of the first GE Edison Challenge. They complemented their presentation with a model that reinforced the market readiness of their product. The GE Edison challenge had attracted over 350 entries from over 100 colleges. And 17 of the pre finalists were at the JFWTC campus to make their presentations on November 6th culminating in the grand finale on the 7th of November where the above two teams were declared the winners and runners up. Train Blazer, the solution developed by Fastrack Developers, is simple in concept and appearance. It offers substantial information, about a passing train to the stationmaster. It seeks to highlight physical conditions like over-speeding, dragging, hot wheel and hot bearing. Harmless low DC voltages are injected into one side of the track, while maintaining the other at ground potential. The presence of an axle (which has wheels on either side, connected electrically as well as mechanically) pulls down the voltage to zero. Abnormal temperature patterns in the wheels and bearings are recorded by an indigenously developed hot wheel/bearing detector. In case of any abnormality an alarm is sounded both to the station master (on his monitor) and to the driver (via his VHF wireless). This prototype was endorsed by the ADSTE and two SSEs at the Indian Railways. For their breakthrough device, the proud winners walked away with a cash prize of Rs.5 lakh and the coveted GE Edison Challenge Trophy. The Runners-up IIT Kharagpur are the runners-up The runners-up, Jitendra Kumar, Vishal Garg and Manish Parmar from IIT Kharagpur who made a well-researched presentation on self-cooling engines received Rs.2 lakh. Their model called the 'Thermionic generator' uses the heat generated by an engine, a waste product, to produce electricity that can be put to further use inside the vehicle. This device increases the thermal efficiency of the engine significantly. |
