During the summer alone, Iraq requires more than 28 GW of power, but it currently generates 18 GW.

Leveraging your existing gas turbines
One way to protect your power plant investment and avoid losing installed power capacity is to keep your equipment up to date with regular maintenance and repairs. Planning ahead is key to improving the power output and efficiency of your existing gas turbine equipment, so if you have a fleet that has been in operation for many years, it may be time for an upgrade.
GE’s Advanced Gas Path (AGP) upgrade increases output and reduces heat rate in both simple cycle and combined-cycle applications and increases exhaust energy for cogeneration or combined-cycle applications. The AGP benefits of this upgrade translate to lower fuel costs and improved revenues for gas turbine customers.

Gas power is key to adding more power sources
As Iraq looks to provide unmet demand for power with new plants, natural gas is emerging as one of the most viable sources of additional power. In fact, if Iraq captures even 30 to 40% of the gas it currently flares —and GE has robust technology to achieve this now—the country can create up to 3.5 GW of additional power using a fuel that would otherwise have been wasted.
GE can help harness the power of natural gas with the world’s most efficient heavy-duty gas turbine —our HA technology—which has already delivered world-record levels of combined-cycle efficiency in both 50 and 60 Hz segments and is the fastest growing fleet of heavy duty gas turbines globally today.
When fast power is needed, GE can also offer one of the world’s most modular, reliable, and experienced mobile gas turbines: The TM2500 aeroderivative gas turbine. Featuring mobile solutions—including trailer-mounted gas turbine generator set and containerized balance of plant—the TM2500 can put power on the grid within 30 days of contract signature.

See how GE is working to add power and improve lives in Iraq
Besmaya
Challenge:Today, the typical Iraqi home and business cannot count on electricity around the clock.
GE’s solution:In July 2019, GE announced an agreement with Mass Energy Group Holding (MGH) for Phase 3 of the Besmaya plant, which will include four 9F gas turbines and four generators, taking the plant’s total capacity to 4.5 GW.
Outcome:Once complete, the Besmaya plant will generate enough electricity to supply up to 4.5 million Iraqi homes. The F-class turbines being used at the plant will be among the most efficient in Iraq, not only increasing the electricity generated per unit of fuel consumed but also lowering the environmental impact of each megawatt of power produced.
Zubair power plant
Highlighting its commitment to keep strengthening Iraq’s power sector, GE Gas Power marked a major milestone by synchronizing two GT13E2 gas turbines to the national grid at the Zubair Permanent Power Generation Plant.
The facility is owned by the Basra Oil Company and located at the Zubair oil field, about 20 kilometers from the city of Basra. ENI Iraq B.V. is responsible for developing the oil field and had awarded a contract to GE for the engineering, procurement, installation and commissioning of the power plant. Two other GT13E2 units at the site had previously been synchronized to the grid in summer 2020. The new additions have taken the total generation capacity of the site up to 700 megawatts (MW).
Grid Solutions: Making sure power gets where it’s needed most
Key to generating new power is making sure the grid is stable and connected enough to get power where it’s needed most. GE has worked closely with Iraq’s government to unify the grid and help make new power generation technologies a reality with several initiatives planned or under way to help strengthen the country’s power grid, including:
- Plans to build new substations, build new overhead lines and cables, and rehabilitate existing substations.
- Five substations in Baghdad will reduce bottlenecks in the eastern areas of the capital and support the transfer of energy generated from power into the local community.
- Building 11 new substations from the north to the south of Iraq to expand the Iraqi transmission and distribution infrastructure to cope with expanded power generation capabilities.
Al Qayyarah
Challenge:The Al Qayyarah power plant went online in 2013, but was damaged by militants in 2016, forcing it to go out of operation.
GE’s solution:GE’s team is working with the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity to repair six GE 9E gas turbines, replace a damaged oil treatment system and fuel tanks, and carry out other restoration works on the balance of plant equipment with the goal to recommence power production at the facility.
Outcome:The plant’s generating capacity has already gone from 50 to 500 MW, and it will soon be capable of producing up to 750 MW. Additionally, GE created employment for approximately 800 workers from the region on the project.
Al Qudus
Challenge:Iraq's energy needs continue to grow. Since 2011, GE has helped bring more than 14,000 MW of power online across Iraq. However, strengthening the power sector entails both adding new generation capacity and ensuring that power plants keep operating efficiently and reliably to meet the everyday needs of Iraq’s citizens and economy.
GE’s solution:GE Power provided an advanced 9E gas turbine to the Ministry of Electricity’s (MoE) Al Qudus Power Plant. GE will also service up to seven GE 9E gas turbines at the facility throughout 2019, including maintenance, supply of parts and rehabilitation.
Outcome:According to Mussab al-Mudarris, Director of the MOE’s media department, "We made a promise to the people of Iraq to bring efficient power online as soon as possible. One of the fastest ways to deliver on this promise is to enhance the productivity of existing power generation facilities. GE, with its large installed base of power generation equipment across Iraq, can help us meet this objective. The delivery of a new gas turbine at Al Qudus Power Plant and our new services agreement with GE will help deliver much-needed power to the national grid reliably within a short timeframe."
Najibiya
Challenge:Operational since 2015, the Najibiya power plant is equipped with four GE 9E gas turbines and generates up to 500 MW for the Iraqi grid. The site is in the southern governorate of Basra, one of the hottest inhabited locations in the world, where temperatures often exceed 50 degrees Celsius. The power generated at the facility is vital for the local population to cope with the extreme temperatures.
GE’s solution:GE installed its Advanced Gas Path (AGP) gas turbine upgrade solution, enabling the plant to increase the duration between maintenance inspections of the gas turbines.
Outcome:Turbine downtime is decreased, and plant availability and performance is improved. Each gas turbine can now feed power into the grid for longer periods, helping to better meet Basra and Iraq’s growing energy needs.
