Home of the world’s largest gas turbine manufacturing plant
Some of GE’s biggest global growth drivers are built right here in the U.S. Our Greenville, South Carolina, site is the largest gas turbine manufacturing plant in the world, producing the majority of its advanced gas turbines for global export.
Built in 1968, this GE Energy site originally housed 250 employees and focused on building the Frame 7 gas turbine. Today, the Greenville site manufactures a diverse range of energy and infrastructure products on a campus spanning 413 acres with over 3,000 employees.
GE Energy’s innovative solutions, such as fuel flexibility for turbines, have been critical in winning major deals, including the $3 billion agreement signed between GE Energy and the government of Iraq, the largest single win in the history of GE Energy.
Powering Up Production
The city of Greenville in South Carolina has the highest per capita number of engineers anywhere in the United States, making it an ideal location for GE Energy. Take a photo tour of this world-class facility.
GE Energy’s Greenville location has been a member of the local business community for 40 years. Since starting in 1968, the site has grown into the world’s largest gas turbine design and production site.
The Greenville campus includes a gas turbines test laboratory, where more than 200 tests are run each year to analyze the reliability and performance of GE turbines.
GE builds eight models of advanced heavy-duty gas turbines in Greenville. Ranging in capacity from 85 to 480 megawatts, they can incorporate technological options such as fuel flexibility.
The Greenville site also manufactures GE Energy’s 1.5-megawatt wind turbine head, which captures clean, renewable power for wind energy sites throughout the United States.
Each year, over 400 customers visit GE Energy at Greenville, where they can inspect products as they undergo combustion testing and tour the manufacturing facility.
With over 3,000 employees, GE Energy is one of the largest employers in the state of South Carolina. Average number of years of experience on the manufacturing floor: 20 years.
Beyond gas turbine manufacturing, the site also produces spare parts, conducts component upgrades and completes repair work to support GE Energy’s global service centers.
With millions of hours of operation, GE Energy’s F-class gas turbine represents the world’s most experienced fleet of highly efficient gas turbines.
At Greenville, it takes approximately 50 days from when materials enter the receiving dock to when the completed gas turbine is delivered to the customer.
GE has the largest installed base of any gas turbine supplier, with over 6,000 units worldwide.
