Helping Customers Harness the Wind

GE has mastered the art and science of wind resource assessment and layout optimization and brings that experience to every project in India.

We identify suitable wind measurement mast locations, conduct site visits for prefeasibility assessments and use state-of-the-art processes and technologies to develop digital elevation and roughness models for sites.

GE has used its wind resource assessment and layout optimization processes across the globe and throughout India.

Proven Tools

We use the best tools available—WindPRO, WAsP, WEng, Meteodyne—to conduct accurate wind assessments. Data collection and analysis provide farm-level annual energy production calculations as well as wind probability estimates, turbine-noise models and a shadow assessment.

The data is then optimized by our proprietary software to generate final assessments whose accuracy is second to none.

WAsP
WAsP, the Wind Atlas Analysis and Application Program, is software that allows GE wind resource assessment teams to model and predict wind climates, wind resources and power production from wind turbines and wind farms. The predictions are based on wind data measured at stations in the same region. The program models complex terrain flow, roughness change and sheltering obstacles.
WEng
WAsP Engineering, or WEng, supports the estimation of loads on wind turbines and other civil engineering structures situated in moderately complex terrain. It models loads created by extreme wind speeds, wind shear and turbulence caused by gusts.
Meteodyn
Meteodyn provides wind calculations, simulations, turbulence and statistical analysis programs that can efficiently and accurately process all the problems connected to on-site climatology. Meteodyn performs energy yield assessments for projects in challenging conditions like complex terrain or forested areas using computational fluid dynamics modeling.
WindPRO
WindPRO is the world's most comprehensive software package for designing and planning wind farm projects. The software allows GE to design wind farms through wind turbine layout and electrical design. Through WAsP's wind flow modeling inputs, WindPRO also lets the team calculate energy production, turbine noise levels, turbine wake losses and turbine suitability.
Industry-Leading Visualization
GE's proprietary optimization tool, WindLAYOUT, ensures maximum use of the site's potential through proper turbine placement based on site-specific data without exceeding the project's design limits.

Before construction begins, the tool evaluates ways of increasing annual energy production by analyzing maximum wind capture locations and configurations for the site. WindLAYOUT guarantees turbine safety through determining mechanical loads and analyses how to maintain noise levels around the location.

GE Verified

We verify our assessments using hundreds of thousands of data points generated from GE's global wind business. Our analysis, verified by GE's internally developed site and wind measurement database, is guaranteed by a plant-level performance warranty. There is no better assurance on wind models and projections than comparing them to what has already been studied in the real world.

The Indian Context

Our assessments have been proven on the ground in India. We have demonstrated energy savings of up to 10 percent over existing layouts. GE's layout optimization capabilities are robust enough to meet site constraints for more than 1,000 different wind turbine layouts.
