Young Women Score High Marks in C++ Test!
Emily Russell from Choate Rosemary Hall in
Wallingford and Chloe Kiddon from Hopkins School in New Haven
tied for second place at the 10th Annual GE Connecticut High
School Computer Science Contest held at GE’s Corporate Headquarters
in Fairfield on April 29. Emily and Chloe are the first female
students to reach the top ranks at this annual event. Throughout
the contest’s ten-year history few female students have participated.
Encouraging young women to study computer programming and test
their skills has never been easy for instructors who teach Advanced
Placement Computer Science classes in Connecticut high schools.
Only 21 of the 143 competitors in this year’s contest are females.
St. Luke's School Wins its 3rd State Championship
Brandon Fulljames from St. Luke’s School in
New Canaan placed first for the second year in a row and helped
his team win the State Championship for the third time. The St.
Luke's team also included Greg Delmar and Doug Magee, who placed
7th in the individual competition. Two teams tied for First Runner-Up:
Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford and Greenwich High School
in Greenwich.
GE Elfun Volunteers, Corporate Information
Services Operation and Fairfield University sponsored the contest
to give individual students and three-member teams the opportunity
to compete and win awards. The written, 90-minute test, created
by math and computer science professors from Fairfield University,
helps prepare students for the Advanced Placement Test in Computer
Science scheduled in May. High school students who score well
on AP tests qualify for upper level college courses.

King, George Lang, Edward J. O'Neill, and Peter Spoerri
from the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science
at Fairfield University.

|
While the students took the test,
their teachers participated in two workshops. Grady Summers,
GE Corporate Information Security Leader, presented Insights on Information Security and the Impact of Java Development, a discussion of how GE is protecting itself from internal and external information
security and data privacy threats. The second workshop, The Changing Face of Software Development, was led by Joe Schulz, Manager, Application Architecture.

2006 State Champion: Christian Heritage
School in Trumbull
The annual Connecticut High School Computer
Science Contest at GE's Corporate Headquarters in Fairfield on
April 25 drew 113 students from 27 public and private schools
throughout the state. The team from Christian Heritage School
in Trumbull placed first. Organized by GE Volunteers, the event,
in its 13th year, continues to be one of the few opportunities
for high school students to compete in an academic field.
The students took a challenging written test
measuring their Java skills. The test was created by professors
from Fairfield University. The 90-minute test helped prepare
the students for the May College Board Advanced Placement Test
in Computer Science.
While the students took the test, their teachers
participated in three workshops conducted by GE employees. Andre
Johnson presented "Solving a Business Problem with Technology", a discussion of how GE uses technology to solve a finance problem. Jake Skoniecki
led the second workshop, Hacker High School, a security initiative.
He discussed various security topics and how the teachers can
work them into their curriculums. John Recine introduced AJAX
and gave the teachers insight into how this new web development
technique is used at GE.
Within an hour of the completion of the test,
the awards were distributed. Congratulations to all the winners!

GE’s 14th Annual Connecticut High School Computer Science Contest drew 110 students
from public and private schools throughout the state. The exam
helped prepare the students for the May College Board Advanced
Placement Test in Computer Science and gave them the rare opportunity
to compete for prizes and receive recognition for excelling in
computer science. Winning teams received banners and cash awards
for their school and individuals received ribbons and cash awards.
Benjamin Leib from Wooster School, the high school junior with
the highest score, was awarded a Presidential Scholarship to
Fairfield University, valued at $52,000 for four years. The top
20 students may enroll in two free computer science courses at
Fairfield University. And all the participants went home with
a contest t-shirt. |

|
While the students took the test their teachers participated in two workshops.
Corporate Security Leader Brad Maiorino and Security Architect
Darren Challey discussed the basics and business impact of application
security. Mike McCabe (to the left), the computer science teacher
from Hopkins School, offered an introduction to GRID Java
Case
Study. |

|
After the test the students received the answer key. To the left are students from North Haven High School relaxing and discussing the exam while they waited for the results. Their team placed second in the team awards. |

Kent School students placed first in GE's Annual Connecticut High School Computer Science Contest.
Students from 21 public and private high schools throughout Connecticut competed
in GE's 2008 Connecticut High School Computer Science Contest, held
on April 24 at Corporate Headquarters in Fairfield. The top three
schools received checks to support computer science activities in
their school and individual students won cash prizes. GE Volunteers
organized the contest to recognize Connecticut high school students
who excel in computer science and help them prepare for the May College
Board Advanced Placement Test in Computer Science. The contest also
encourages students to pursue careers in the information technology
field.
|

|
The teachers and their students like the yearly contest and are grateful for a well-organized and fun day. "I am thrilled with the results (we are a tiny independent school that has placed two students in the top ten both last year and this year). I also appreciate the hospitality and the motivation of GE in hosting this event," says Len Leib, math and computer science teacher at Wooster School in Danbury.
During the competition 110 students took a written 90-minute test that measures their proficiency in Java and is similar to the College Board Advanced Placement Exam in Computer Science. Software engineering faculty at Fairfield University created the test. The top 20 students are eligible to enroll in a free computer science course at Fairfield University.
|
| |
While the students took the test some teachers participated in a panel discussion with GE employees about preparing for careers in computer science. Alan Burke, Manager, Corporate Initiatives/Citizenship Applications; Hope Colbert, Manager, Corporate Staff Systems; Ryan Kaisoglus, EdgeLab Emerging Technologies Leader; Alan Mammen, Manager, Global Software Quality Assurance; and Jennifer Walsh, Global Director, Digital Media served on the panel.
Other teachers used their free time to talk to each other. Several teachers bring teams every year and enjoy getting together to exchange ideas about teaching computer science.

Over 100 participants from 14 different schools across Connecticut participated in the 2011 GE Computer Science Competition. Thanks to all of the hard work of the University of Connecticut and the GE Volunteers and speakers, this year was a great success!
The students were welcomed with presentations by Dayan Anandappa, Leader of Digital Media Technologies; Matt Brooks, IMLP Program Manager; and Jeffrey Meunier, a member of the CSE staff from UConn and author of this year’s test. A few mobile apps, laughs and leadership programs later the students were ready to begin their journey through 50 Java AP-style questions touching on concepts such as inheritance, looping, and conditional statements.
We would like to thank all of the participants and congratulate the following notables!
