COLLEGE ACCESS/SCHOOL REFORM
- A SYSTEM OF SOLUTIONS: Every School, Every Student (PDF, 7.96 MB), commissioned by the GE Foundation and published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), explains how ten K-12 school districts, serving disadvantaged, inner-city regions, are improving performance and closing the gap between minority and non-minority students in science and mathematics. The report identifies six factors that are critical for achieving sustained success in improving the performance of science and mathematics education for all students.
- What do we know? Seeking Effective Math & Science Instruction (PDF, 308 KB), published by the Urban Institute, identifies curricula and professional development models with evidence of effectiveness in increasing student achievement. The GE Foundation commissioned the study to inform its efforts to achieve sustainable academic improvement for underrepresented and disadvantaged students. A summary (PDF, 163 KB) is also available.
- Expanding College Access, Strengthening Schools: Evaluation of the GE Fund College Bound Program (PDF, 420 KB), details findings of an independent evaluation of College Bound conducted by a team from the Brandeis University Heller School's Center for Youth and Communities. Includes statistics on outcomes of the program overall and at individual schools, lessons learned, and recommendations. A summary (PDF, 108 KB) is also available.
- Raising Minority Academic Achievement: A Compendium of Education Programs and Practices, published by the American Youth Policy Forum, provides data for policymakers and practitioners interested in improving the academic success of racial and ethnic minorities from early childhood through advanced postsecondary study. Includes summaries of 38 school and youth programs, including College Bound.
- Paving the Way to Postsecondary Education: K-12 Intervention Programs for Underrepresented Youth (PDF, 652 KB), published by the National Postsecondary Education Cooperative, describes K-12 intervention programs designed to increase rates of college-going for groups historically underrepresented in postsecondary education, and identifies the data and information necessary for evaluating these programs. College Bound is featured as a "promising practice."
- The GE Foundation supported a Public Agenda national survey of young adults ages 18 to 25 to find out how they make decisions about what to do after high school. Most of the young adults surveyed - be they African American, Hispanic or Latino, Asian American or white - reported that they strongly believe in the value of higher education. But the study, Life After High School: Young People Talk about Their Hopes and Prospects, also raises questions about the shortage of high school counselors and the economic pressures felt by many young adults, especially minorities, who face difficult decisions regarding college. www.publicagenda.org
- The GE Foundation also supports the publication of The Progress of Education Reform series by the Education Commission of the States, an organization working within and across states to improve educational achievement and opportunity for all Americans. The reports can be viewed at www.ecs.org
- The Pathways to College Network, an alliance of the GE Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, seven other funders and 15 national education organizations, is focused on gathering research-backed data on effective practices in increasing preparation for and access to college among under-represented students. Their many publications can be viewed at www.pathwaystocollege.net
DIVERSITY AND QUANTITATIVE CAREERS
- Engagement, Capacity and Continuity: A Trilogy For Student Success. Commissioned by the GE Foundation, this report identifies three factors that must be present for students in order to ensure continuation in the sciences and qualitative disciplines. The report analyzes why reform efforts have not led to broader increases in students achieving at high levels, nor entering science and math oriented careers, and provides recommendations to bring about student success. View the full report (PDF, 351 KB) or summary (PDF, 161 KB).
DIVERSITY AND HIGHER EDUCATION
- Minorities in Higher Education: Twenty-Second Annual Status Report, The GE Foundation sponsored this report by the American Council on Education. It compiles statistics and examines trends related to underrepresented groups in higher education. Results show that while students of color continue to make significant gains in college enrollment, they still lag behind their white counterparts in the higher education domain. www.acenet.edu
- Faculty for the Future: Increasing the Diversity of Higher Education (PDF, 133 KB), provides an overview of the GE Foundation's Faculty for the Future program and its impact. The program has cultivated over 200 new women and minority faculty members in the fields of engineering, business and science.
