United Way
For more than 40 years, GE Foundation with GE employees and retirees have supported United Way with fundraising efforts in communities large and small. Total giving in 2009 of nearly $33 million — $20.9 million from employees and retirees and $12 million from GE Foundation — places GE among the top United Way supporters. But our investment isn’t just a financial one. GE employees and retirees support United Way agencies by building playgrounds, collecting supplies for food banks, renovating homeless shelters and serving as Big Brothers and Sisters, and more.
GE also helps its customers to “Live United” by donating two percent of appliance sales from the online GE Appliance Outlet Store to United Way. So with every purchase of a new home appliance — be it a refrigerator, dishwasher, range, washer or dryer — customers are getting a new appliance at a discount price, as well as helping to advance the common good. Visit the GE Appliance Outlet Store to start shopping.
A special note: In response to the economic recession, the GE Foundation increased its contribution to United Way from 40 percent to 50 percent on behalf of the annual workplace giving campaigns for 2008–09, with the entire 50 percent going to qualified food and shelter organizations and related services in the United States. This gift was a contribution above and beyond the annual employee and retiree giving campaign. For the 2009–10 campaigns the GE Foundation contribution will remain at the 50 percent level.
