Developing Futures in Stamford, Connecticut
The Stamford Public School district, the fifth largest in Connecticut, received a $15.3 million, five-year education grant from the GE Foundation to improve student achievement in math and science. The grant supports a comprehensive effort to improve student scores and learning in math and science, close achievement gaps and encourage more students to attend college.
The GE Foundation grant will allow the school system to make improvements that it could not normally do within its standard operations budget. The district is using the grant to implement a rigorous, system-wide math and science curriculum based on a model refined with the help of various educational experts. Teachers and administrators are participating in professional development activities, enhancing their technology skills and collaborating with other educators. Overall, the five-year improvement plan is focusing on improving math and science teaching, enhancing the curriculum, performing in-depth evaluation and strengthening the district’s management functions.
The program involves school, business and community collaboration, along with GE senior executives and GE Volunteers, who are contributing their time to support district improvement and student success.
