Developing Futures in Erie, Pennsylvania
The School District of the City of Erie, Pennsylvania, is a recipient of a $15 million education grant from the GE Foundation. The five-year grant supports a comprehensive effort to improve student scores and learning in math and science, close achievement gaps and encourage more students to attend college.
This GE Foundation grant is being used to develop a rigorous, system-wide math and science curriculum in City of Erie schools based on a model refined with the help of various educational experts. The grant targets improved math and science teaching, enhanced curriculum development and systemic change across the entire school district. The district will benefit from new learning opportunities for students and professional development plans for teachers.
As a key component of the program, schools, businesses and the community collaborate to support students and teachers. GE Volunteers, local professional groups, parents and members of the Erie community contribute their time to advancing students’ learning opportunities. These efforts equip Erie children and youth with the knowledge and skills to succeed in school and effectively transition to productive careers.
