Transcript: Innovation - Health care in Cambodia

  1. This is the story of GE volunteers who went to Cambodia to serve as ambassadors to hospitals that have received donations from GE

    Tom Ng:
Volunteering to do this for GE, it's amazing. I did not know what to expect when I got here, and you can be surprised by the conditions here. The mortality rate, both infant and maternal is very high here in Cambodia, but it's also a very friendly country and we want to make a difference. My role as a GE ambassador is after the equipment is donated to build an ongoing relationship.
  2. Kitty Yoh:
GE is not simply giving a donation of equipment and that's that. The fact that they're asking a number of us to establish the relationships. That's quite different, allowing doctors to have more sophisticated diagnosis will allow them to identify a condition that needs to be treated early on, and what we hope to do is get information, which shows that they're reaching more of the community.
  3. Tom Ng:
I'm the one that this hospital is looking to if they have serious issues. Having that responsibility can be scary, because here they have 100 births in just the last month. It's quite shocking in terms of seeing things that, as an engineer, working on aircraft engines, I wouldn't normally see. We took a walk around and saw first the 3 maternity beds that GE provided, but on top of one was a woman giving birth. Now, great to see, right next to the woman giving birth was the infant warmer system, and the hot water system that GE had also provided.
  4. Kitty Choo:
You would add to the other machines, because it didn't have the devices, but this naturally allows you to -- The head of anesthesiology told me what's great about the equipment for her is she can actually see more patients at once. What used to be manual, if not an intuitive, calculation on her part, is now a science.
  5. Tom Ng:
The doctors and nurses are somewhat still looking for the gotcha! And what does GE really want. Our intent is to be a good global citizen.
  6. Kitty Yoh:
There are few companies that can do this like GE. GE has the diversified product line. I think it's really inspiring to be a part of this project, seeing how this helps improve healthcare in Cambodia one step at a time.
