Mark graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1983 with a Bachelor of Business Administration and with an MBA from Bellarmine College in Louisville, Kentucky. He joined GE as a Technical Sales Representative for GE Information Services in 1983.

After transferring to GE Aircraft Engines to complete the Financial Management Program, he moved on to hold a variety of financial assignments with GE Appliances and GE Corporate Headquarters before returning to GE Aircraft Engines as Manager Finance, Worldwide Marketing and Sales. In January 1996, he joined NBC as Vice President of Financial Planning and Analysis and Domestic Business Development. From NBC he went to GE Plastics, in August 1997, to become CFO for GE Plastics, Americas. He returned to GE Corporate Headquarters in Fairfield, in August 2000, and was named to his current position in July 2009.
