Compliance & Governance

During 2007, in order to develop and independent feel for the Company, each of the outside Board members independently visited at least two GE businesses.

GE’s commitment to perform with integrity is instilled in every employee as a
non-negotiable expectation of behavior. This expectation is guided by our integrity policy, The Spirit & The Letter, and is underscored by an extensive system of policies, processes, training and communications.

Yet, even with the best systems in place, compliance is never easy. In a global and varied marketplace, fulfilling compliance obligations is a complex and demanding undertaking.

GE meets this challenge by devoting its full resources to ensuring our systems are applied properly and consistently. We depend heavily on our ombudsperson process, operating mechanisms and governance principles, as well as the involvement, objectivity and accountability of our board.

GE MODELS OF INTEGRITY

GE has built and maintained our strong culture of integrity and compliance by remaining dedicated to our governance policies. Our ombudsperson process and integrity statement, The Spirit & The Letter, are two of the ways we keep open channels of communication and make clear our policies and expectations of employees.

Ombudsperson Process

Employees and others with connections to GE must have confidence that they can freely report concerns about legal or ethical violations. Our ombudsperson process serves as a mechanism for these individuals to ask questions and report integrity issues without fear of retribution.

The global GE ombudsperson network includes more than 700 ombudspersons that provide coverage for every business and country in which GE operates. GE ombudspersons are trained in procedures for receiving concerns, initiating investigations and monitoring case progress and closure. Furthermore, all ombudspersons speak the local language and understand the culture and business environment of his or her locations.

To report concerns related to the compliance with the law, GE policies or government contracting requirements, write to GE Corporate Ombudsperson, P.O. Box 911, Fairfield, CT 06825; or call (800) 227-5003 or (203) 373-2603; or send an email to ombudsperson@corporate.ge.com.

The Spirit & The Letter

The Spirit & The Letter is a guide to help employees understand the standards of conduct that the company sees as fundamental to honoring its commitment to performance with integrity. It helps GE achieve compliance by establishing a common standard of behavior required of all employees — everyone, everywhere, every day.

As the title suggests, GE's approach to compliance is founded on a commitment to perform with integrity according to both the spirit and the letter of the law everywhere GE does business. The Spirit & The Letter also articulates the special responsibilities of company leaders to create a culture of compliance within their businesses and functions. The booklet contains GE's core compliance policies and is made available to employees globally in 31 languages.
