What were you doing before joining GE?

After graduating from college, I took a software engineer position at Subex Systems, a telecommunications software firm in Bangalore India. Fate intervened and I met my husband Vinay, who was working with GE at Erie PA and I moved to United States.

Why did you decide to join GE?

Innovation. I read the GE caption "Imagination at Work" from one of the forwarded emails from my friends in my undergrad, it made me to aspire to be part of GE one day. After moving to United States, I interned with GE and it gave me the opportunity to pursue my passion in software engineering.

What are you working on now?

I work as Lead Software Engineer for Intelligent Control Systems of GE Transportation. We design and develop the software for onboard locomotive systems, locomotive gateway interfaces , provide various communication solutions such as Satellite, Cellular and Wi-Fi from locomotive to customer network. We also design and develop the software infrastructure for Trip Optimizer, which is product of Ecomagination, it is an advanced energy management system that optimizes fuel consumption based on a specific train's makeup and the route being traveled.
I am currently leading the software team to design and develop software for Onboard Locomotive Interface gateway which is part of Positive Train Control (PTC) System, PTC is a system of monitoring and controlling train movements to provide increased safety by preventing train collisions, speed derailments, incursions into established work zone limits and movement of a train through a switch left in the improper position.

What has been most rewarding about your GE experience?

My work makes a huge impact on railroad business and even to a common man. Designing software to make fuel efficient locomotives and safe locomotive operations, provides a huge satisfaction that I am contributing to my society to make it a better tomorrow.
