What were you doing before joining GE?

During my time at Exeter University I did several part-time IT jobs for small software houses and website designers. I also interned for Sun Microsystems and worked my evenings producing events for the University from a technical side; lighting and sound engineering.

Working for GE was like no job I had done before, not only was the scope and importance of the work much greater than I had expected but what struck me was the freedom I was given to execute in the role. I was given my high level goals but it was up to me to make the project my own. My manager doesn't watch over me, he relies on me to deliver; but he's always there if I need help solving a problem.

Why did you decide to join GE?

I didn't! GE is a huge respected force in the global marketplace and has a reputation and track-record for buying up companies to integrate their technology and expertise. I applied to one of those companies, Smiths Aerospace in 2007, who were bought by GE shortly after I was offered a job. I worked as a Systems Engineer on civil avionics platforms for nearly 2 years.

The difference GE bought to the workplace was apparent almost immediately, suddenly there was so much more knowledge and leadership in the company and GE's passion for training and developing their staff was obvious. In 2009, after seeing the huge positive effect GE had on our business, I made the move to join a GE leadership program.

What are you working on?

I am in my first rotation as an ITLP and I currently work as a Project Manager for our ITIL team. My project is to develop reports which will allow us to detect policy gaps in our Configuration Management Database and verify the accuracy of the data it holds. The accuracy and completeness of the CMDB is paramount to the integrity and stability of our IT infrastructure.

My responsibilities cover the high-level management of the project, engagement of our internal and contracted development teams and reporting progress to leadership. Though primarily a project management role, this rotation builds on all the aspects of the Bootcamp training. My technical knowledge is invaluable for understanding and verifying the deliverables produced for the project and identifying improvements in the process.

What has been most rewarding about your GE experience?

The world class training and opportunities to network at all levels of the business. I have only been with the ITLP program for 3 months but already I have been on a 4 week intensive residential training course, I am currently enrolled in a another course and I have built up a huge network of friends and colleagues across the globe. I am very proud to be part of GE and their constant development and innovation in all areas of their businesses make it an exciting place to work. It's not until you work for GE that you truly appreciate how many areas of our everyday lives GE touches.
