With my current responsibilities as IT Risk Solutions Leader, I get to deal with lots of different kinds of issues and challenges - including application development, project implementation, service operations, IT security & compliance, IT strategy, vendor management, and customer service. It is a huge challenge to balance and prioritize all that needs to be done, and that makes it very interesting and exciting: strategizing, resourcing with the best talent, planning, prioritizing and executing with rigor and quality.
The breadth and scale of GE is amazing! If you are capable and willing, the sky is truly the limit. When I joined GE 10 years ago, I was looking for a company where I could build a career and that is exactly what I found. I have had technical roles, process focused roles, organization leadership roles, and everything in between. As our products and services become more IT driven, IT security is a top priority. The skills you get working in IT at GE are becoming invaluable. I could not imagine a better place to be.
Throughout my career in GE, I have had exposure to a number of IT and business functions. From the IT side, I made sure that I ran custom development projects, infrastructure projects, process & lean six sigma projects and worked on Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) deployments. Every role and every project came with lessons to apply to what I do here every day. Exposure to multiple IT business functions is critical to being able to support them. Bringing the business context to IT security is helping me position my IT Risk Solutions team for success.
My current role is probably the most challenging I've faced. The challenges and issues in IT Security and Compliance are more dynamic than ever. We are trying to do a number of things at once: protect the business and enable it, while at the same time move our application architecture to new technology standards. The trick is moving all these critical focus areas together seamlessly.
Be authentic. It begins with knowing who you are, what you're good at and what you believe in. With that as a foundation, your self-confidence and authenticity will augment your technical skillset and allow you to lead and be successful with any challenge you are given.
