A Partnership to Fuel Imagination at Play
GE Canada is a National Cornerstone partner with Actua, a national charitable organization dedicated to providing young Canadians with positive, hands on learning experiences in science, technology and engineering. Actua delivers summer camps, workshops, and community programs to youth across the country through a growing network of members many located in universities across Canada. The organization currently reaches 225,000 young people in 450 communities.
The Actua partnership provides many opportunities for GE employees to get involved. Our contributions fall into three areas: financial, volunteers and gifts-in-kind. Strategic advice, developing project ideas, participating in workshops/camps, fundraising, mentoring, and workplace tours are ways GE employees engage with Actua.

GEHC Canada took the lead in developing and delivering the first GE Canada/Actua Family Day a Huge Success. GEHC took the lead to hold the first GE Canada/Actua Family Day at the GE Canada Corporate offices in Meadowvale, Ontario. GE Canada Family Day hosted more than 120 children of GE employees in a fun-filled day of science activities.
The day was developed as a way to expose more GE Canada employees to Actua and to provide GEHC employees with a great volunteering opportunity. "Actua is a fantastic organization," said Peter Robertson, General Manager for GEHC Canada. "They're passionate about getting more kids thinking about careers in the sciences and we have employees passionate about their science-related careers. Family Day became a great vehicle to match both our interests. Science Outreach, an Actua partner, developed the curriculum for the day to focus on healthy living. GEHC Volunteers made sure the kids engaged directly with healthcare equipment to see first hand how technology makes understanding the human body easier.
Using images on an AW workstation, they were able to see inside the human hand. Some even had the chance to use those images to make a video of a hand waving at them, which they took home on CD as a souvenir of the day. This provided great context for the kids on the biomechanics of the hand as they built a model hand out of cardboard and string that could grab a light object.
Eyes grew wide when cardiac ultrasound and ECG monitors were used to show them the human heart beating in real time and to demonstrate how electricity makes their heart work. Said one participant, "I liked watching people's hearts on the ultrasound. That was really cool." By understanding how the heart worked they were able to measure their own heart rate and see how it compared to an Olympic athlete.
GEHC Volunteers were also on hand to help with logistics and be hands on with the kids in the workshops to ensure everyone had a great time.
