[[Manufacturing]]

[[Karan Bhatia, Vice-President of Global Government Affairs and Policy, GE]]

[International markets are critical to our company and to our country's growth. ]

[The fastest-growing markets in the world are outside of the United States.]

[More than 95% of the world's consumers reside outside of the United States,]

[so if we're going to grow and grow as fast and effectively as we need to, ]

[we're going to have to be able to effectively compete in international markets. ]

[[Ed Gerwin, Senior Fellow for Trade and Global Economic Policy, Third Way]]

[Exporting is crucial to the American economy because it helps us ]

[tap into growth in foreign markets. ]

[You know, a famous bank robber once said that he robbed banks]

[because that's where the money is. ]

[Well, the United States needs to export because that's where the economic growth is. ]

[[Bill Lane, Washington Director for Governmental Affairs, Caterpillar]]

[Over half of what we make in the United States, we export. And over the last 4 years, ]

[over half of what we export we've exported to non-OECD countries. ]

[So it's just absolutely critical, if you want to keep growing, if you want to be part of]

[the very dynamic economy right now, you need to export. ]

[[Jay Timmons, President and CEO, National Association of Manufacturers]]

[Exporting means jobs. Manufacturing means jobs. And the more products that we]

[manufacture in the United States, the more jobs we create for Americans. ]

[The more markets that we have access to, the more exports ]

[that we can send to those markets. ]

[If we are not aggressive in doubling or even going beyond doubling]

[our exports from this country, the United States will be at a severe competitive disadvantage.]

[[John Rice, Vice-Chairman, President & CEO of Global Growth & Operations, GE]]

[Manufacturing is really important because in addition to the work that gets done]

[in an Erie or an Evendale, Ohio, or Greenville, South Carolina, ]

[producing a locomotive, a jet engine, or a gas turbine, ]

[it creates a supply chain. ]

[There are many jobs that feed into those big assembly or manufacturing operations. ]

[I think it's really important for us to be good at manufacturing, and we are. ]

[We have world-class manufacturing operations in a lot of our businesses. ]

[We can move goods around. We can develop capabilities which we're good at]

[and take advantage of capabilities that might exist in another place,]

[and at the end of the day, this is about creating economic value and creating jobs. ]

[It's important that we create jobs in the United States. ]

[It's important that we create jobs in other countries. ]
