[[Chile's Copper Mining Challenges and Solutions]]

[[Diego Hernandez, CEO-Codelco] ]

[We need to keep our competitiveness--]

[and that goes through some expansions]

[and some investments, ]

[but also reorganization--]

[and make better use of our resources. ]

[We are working very hard on that. ]

[Our oldest mine has been in production]

[for 106 years-- ]

[the next one for 96 years. ]

[It's not new mines, we need to keep both mines very competitive. ]

[[Peter Carter-Global Leader-GE Mining Solutions]]

[The next capital investments are a long way from developing the infrastructure. ]

[Huge incremental investments, ]

[and those next oil bodies that they've discovered and they're trying to develop]

[and deeper and lower grade. ]

[[Fernando Garcia, Senior VP, Latin America-SNC Lavalin]]

[There is a consensus on the amount of work that is coming, all the challenges that,]

[even though we didn't prepare a presentation together, ]

[I think there are a lot of similarities on that. ]

[And we have to work together]

[in order to overcome the situation. ]

[[The Challenges]]

[[Hugo Silva, Latin America Region Leader-GE Mining Solutions] ]

[The main challenge these mines have is to develop themselves]

[in the north of Chile, south of Peru, is the cost of energy. ]

[They're paying $180 per megawatt hour. ]

[So this produces a significant burden for the development.]

[Tied with this, water is another challenge.]

[[Karen Poniachik, Former Minister of Mining, Republic of Chile]]

[We have had several droughts. Our sources of water have been depleted. ]

[Regulations that mining companies face]

[are exactly the same regulations that all companies in Chile face,]

[in terms of water rights and water quality. ]

[The problem is availability of water. ]

[Some companies can, and do,]

[have the rights, ]

[but there is no water available, and sometimes they compete with other sectors, ]

[like agriculture or even the community.]

[So pumping water from the ocean ]

[into the mines]

[has a cost of $3-$4 a cubic meter,]

[which is an enormous amount of energy ]

[and water and cost burden that these mines have. ]

[Combine that with an average elevation]

[well above 2000 meters and many close to 4000 meters.]

[To move the water from where it's available]

[to where it needs to be is a serious challenge. ]

[[The Solutions]]

[[Jose Luis Fernandez, GM, Foster Wheeler-Chile]]

[We have discovered several prospects in which we can work together. ]

[We are working now in the operating consideration. ]

[We are working now on several projects about water supply for the mining industry. ]

[GE's portfolio for water]

[includes all the technologies for ]

[the desalination of water in various stages]

[to various qualities depending on the needs of the customer. ]

[And the oil and gas portfolio offers some unique pumping solutions]

[that have been developed specifically for ]

[the deep oil industry. ]

[You combine those two technologies]

[and you can move that water of the right quality to the right elevation.]

[We see General Electric as a very good friend.]

[It's a really first-class supplier--]

[manufacturing company. ]

[But I think what also will be very important]

[in the future of the projects is to develop]

[more partnership with EPC-type of companies. ]

[I think that facilitates]

[the execution of projects. ]

[We need to look very carefully about power and water. ]

[That's key for the competitiveness ]

[of our industry in the medium and long term. ]

[We are working hard on that,]

[and I think we have a very good partnership ]

[with GE on those particular matters]

[where innovation is key.]
