[[♫ GE Power & Water] [Glen Messina - Global Business Leader, Chemical & Monitoring Solutions] ]
[[What are some of the biggest challenges industry is facing today]
[in general and around water treatment?]]
[Yeah, the challenges industry is--the biggest challenges industries are facing today]
[One, it's a global competitive landscape.]
[So, having to deal with competition from around the globe and--you know--the world]
[just wasn't that way 10 or 15 years ago.]
[You know--the second is it's a volatile economic climate.]
[We've just emerged from one of the deepest recessions in recent history,]
[and it is a rocky recovery. There's pockets of tremendous growth.]
[There's pockets of lackluster growth.]
[And there's concerns every day as to whether or not we're truly out of the recession]
[and whether certain sectors of the economy or industry are going to survive.]
[Third is degrading quality of feedstocks.]
[So whether it be water, whether it be crude oil, whether it be minerals stocks,]
[the available supply of high-quality materials has diminished greatly,]
[so people are having to reach into lower and lower grades of feedstock to operate their plants. ]
[And--you know--as it relates to water, it really circles around quality and availability.]
[More so, water scarcity is being recognized across the globe.]
[People are finding there are fewer sources of clean, fresh water,]
[and where they can find water, generally the quality is very poor.]
[So it's incumbent upon us to find solutions for our customers to be able to]
[economize on their use of water through water reuse and allow them or provide them with]
[services and technology that enables them to use these degrading qualities of water]
[without degrading the performance of their business. ]
[[What are some of the technologies that industry is looking for, ]
[and what is GE's role in developing those?]]
[Sure. You know, the technologies our customers are looking for are technologies ]
[that drive a better cost performance for their business.]
[It's about delivering the same or better performance at a lower price point,]
[enabling our customers to be more competitive. ]
[And GE is investing broadly in all of its businesses in new technologies through its]
[global research centers to drive cost performance curves to a lower point]
[than they ever have before, which will enable our customers to be more competitive]
[in an ever-changing global landscape.]
[[What role do automation and knowledge management]
[Knowledge management, broadly, is about using operating information from across]
[a customer's production process to optimize the performance of their process]
[and to do it in a simple and efficient manner and do away with multiple management systems,]
[spreadsheets, data logs, and things of that nature. ]
[You know, in water treatment, it's the same.]
[Our customers' cooling towers, boilers, and wastewater treatment plants consume]
[lots of energy. They have their own operating costs and operating parameters]
[associated with them. And by getting information about the performance]
[of our chemistries, the performance of our people, the operating conditions of the asset,]
[the quality of the input and output going through those assets, ]
[we can optimize the performance of the asset 24/7, enabling the customer, again,]
[[What is GE's play in knowledge management and automation?]]
[GE is investing heavily in knowledge management and automation across ]
[all of its service platforms, whether it be healthcare services, aviation services, ]
[chemical and monitoring solutions, energy services.]
[We think it's the key tool--the linchpin, so to speak--to be able to enable your customers]
[to optimize the cost performance of their business processes. ]
