[[GE On Demand] [audio] Hi, this is Ed Downing from the GE Podcasting Team,]
[and you're listening to the first installment of the GE Appliances Podcast Series.]
[Today I'm joined by GE Range General Manager Leanne Dugan]
[and GE Appliances Product Manager Mike DeLain]
[for a special podcast on adding versatility to the kitchen.]
[In this podcast we'll talk a little bit about upcoming trends]
[surrounding versatility in the kitchen]
[and how GE appliances can help make your kitchen more efficient.]
[With that, let's get this podcast started.]
[Now Leanne, what trends have you been seeing in the marketplace]
[when it comes to adding versatility to kitchens?]
[[Dugan] I think to understand the versatility in the kitchen trend,]
[you really need to start with the demographic trends:]
[growth in the empty nester population, families with young children.]
[Busy schedules mean people are eating at different times,]
[and all of those things are driving smaller meals cooked at home.]
[The next thing you can look at is food manufacturer trends.]
[I think of Pillsbury, a large food manufacturer,]
[who has a new marketing campaign around cooking for two.]
[Second, you can take a look at the growth of the Gourmet to Go industry.]
[Grocery store chains are doing it, a lot of small specialty stores]
[are preparing foods ahead of time that you can just take home and heat up]
[in whatever proportions you want to,]
[and really developing products that accommodate those changing food styles]
[and cooking styles at home is really our goal.]
[[DeLain] Leanne, along with the food manufacturers, ]
[you also have the restaurant industry that is changing their offering to more take and bake,]
[where you can have custom, unique meals for your family,]
[take that from the restaurant, bring it home, and bake it at your convenience,]
[when it's convenient for your family.]
[[Dugan] There's one final trend really when you look at manufactured products.]
[Believe it or not, the toaster oven industry has grown tremendously over the last few years.]
[And again, it's people trying to make a smaller, more convenient cavity at home.]
[So our job at GE is really to make your main traditional cooking cavity]
[do what the toaster oven is trying to do and really deliver on supporting these trends.]
[[Downing] Wow. I never really would have guessed that the demand ]
[for having a versatile kitchen is so great in today's marketplace.]
[Along those lines, what is GE doing to respond to these trends?]
[[DeLain] Ed, there's three areas that we've focused on recently in our cooking products.]
[One is freestanding ranges, both in gas and electric fuel.]
[It's a 30-inch wide traditional product.]
[What we've done is we've added a second oven cavity to the product,]
[so you have the traditional larger cavity but then a smaller cavity]
[where you can cook things like pizzas and baked goods, buns, ]
[giving you that flexibility if you wanted to cook two things at once,]
[or just heat up the smaller cavity for something quick.]
[The second area is our new Advantium technology,]
[which combines microwave technology and halogen speed technology]
[to give you oven fresh or browning technology or capability]
[The third area is built-in warming drawers, ]
[where you've got the ability to keep something warm]
[while you wait for that one person that was maybe a little late for dinner.]
[So you've got those three areas that we offer.]
[[Dugan] I think a great side benefit too to some of the smaller cavity cooking]
[is really energy efficiency.]
[It's usually quicker to preheat a smaller cavity,]
[uses less energy to cook the food, and really doesn't heat up your kitchen quite so much,]
[so a lot of tremendous energy benefits as well.]
[[Downing] And that must be a big thing during these summertime months. ]
[[Downing] Leanne, Mike, thank you for joining me today.]
[It really sounds like GE Appliances are adding versatility to the kitchen everywhere,]
