[[Vivek Kemp] Below the crowded streets of New York City runs a complex network ]
[of pipelines that deliver natural gas to millions of residents. ]
[So what happens when you need to inspect one of those pipelines ]
[without interrupting gas pressure and flow ]
[and also without having a feasible entrance into the system either?]
[That was challenge facing National Grid USA, ]
[which owns a 2-mile stretch of pipeline that barrels underneath Brooklyn and Queens.]
[The company tapped the services of GE Oil and Gas to find a solution. ]
[Enter GE's Smart Scan, also commonly called a "pig."]
[The machine bullets through pipelines using magnetic technology]
[to detect corrosion along the way.]
[The problem in Brooklyn was getting the pig into the pipeline.]
[The team had to find a way to insert a subway car into a tunnel without an entrance]
[and somehow not cause any delays in service.]
[GE tackled the problem by installing its Smart Launch system,]
[an angled fitting that maintains the necessary gas pressure and flow,]
[while at the same time, allowing for the injection of the pig.]
[The deployment of GE's Smart Launch technology assures operators can inspect]
[the integrity of even the most difficult to reach pipelines.]
