[I'm really excited to be here today at the first U.S. launch of ]

[the Banking on Women program. ]

[The Banking on Women program is a program that]

[helps women entrepreneurs with]

[mentoring and training in financial literacy. ]

[It's helped thousands of women]

[outside the U.S., and we're really excited to partner]

[here in Utah with the Utah Microenterprise Loan Fund]

[and Salt Lake Community College. ]

[[Kathy Ricci, Utah Microenterprise Loan Fund] I run the Utah Microenterprise Loan Fund, ]

[and we are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. ]

[We're actually considered a community development]

[financial institution, and so we help people start or grow]

[businesses that are not able to get traditional bank ]

[or credit union funding. ]

[We have so many women business owners here in Salt Lake and in Utah. ]

[It's one of the fastest growing segments of our business community.]

[[Betsy Burton The King's English Bookshop Owner] I own a bookstore called]

[The King's English Bookshop, and it's been around for 33 years. ]

[So we've weathered the chains coming]

[weathered everybody saying that ]

[independent bookstores are a thing of the past. ]

[We've come out really doing very well, indeed, and the chains not so well]

[in competition with Amazon, so we feel like]

[you should always take the long view]

[and hold onto your vision of what you think you should be doing.]

[[Blake Spalding Co-Founder of Hell's Backbone Grill] We have a line of credit with a bank, ]

[and this winter--we've always been ]

[in really good shape, and we've been debt-free--but]

[this last year]

[things shifted--well, it was 2009--]

[things shifted really dramatically, and we weren't quite prepared.]

[When I went to]

[my bank and said I could use some more]

[support, they said no. ]

[Banks don't help, bummer. ]

[Good thing there's alternatives. ]

[Programs like this one. >>Programs like this one. ]

[[Jim Matheson U.S. House of Representatives] Today represents a circumstance for various]

[partners that have come together to help create those]

[opportunities for success. ]

[The challenge facing anyone trying ]

[to start a small business or grow a small business--]

[the challenges are many.]

[A dynamic marketplace, a lot of competition, ]

[and access to capital, of course, is always]

[a challenge that is faced,]

[and that's the big focus of this discussion today. ]

[[Pat Jones Utah State Senate Minority Leader] Mentoring our young women is]

[extremely important--]

[mentoring other women.]

[Women are twice as likely to launch new businesses today, ]

[so you certainly see that the effort is]

[there and the desire is there. ]

[In what you're doing, I am encouraging you to go for it]

[whatever your passion is, and as ]

[Thoreau said, "Whatever thou art, act well by part." ]

[[Tim Carfi, President & CEO GE Capital Financial] My name is Tim Carfi.]

[I'm the president and CEO of GE Capital Financial, ]

[which is GE's industrial bank]

[here in Salt Lake City, Utah. ]

[We're really excited to have this opportunity to participate]

[on behalf of GE Capital, partnered with ]

[the local community college and the UMLF to give this opportunity to ]

[women in our community. ]

[We really feel strongly that it will provide women in our community]

[the opportunity to get the tools and the]

[mentorship that's necessary for them to succeed. ]
