[GE imagination at work]

[A commitment to developing our leaders]

[[Geoff Cubort] The commitment by the company to the development of its employees ]

[is I don't think matched anywhere else.]

[[An innovative approach to training]]

[[Geoff Cubort] Taking 50 senior executives out of their day jobs to study growth opportunities ]

[in a new market.]

[After these 3 weeks away, rubbing shoulders with such a talented group of people,]

[you come away with a different perspective, with deeper understanding and learnings,]

[and you are improved as a professional.]

[[A remarkable experience]]

[You've got to be here on the ground to really understand what's going on in the country,]

[You can conceptionalize it. You can talk about it in the classroom,]

[but until you actually get down here and get a sense of what is going on,]

[you really can't understand what their needs are.]

[It's not every day you spend 3 weeks in Africa.]

[and we're talking about a continent that has a billion people.]

[We're talking about a continent that has massive infrastructure needs.]

[ that GE can service.]

[Just yesterday I met with the prime minister of Kenya.]

[The day before that I met with the CEO of Kenya Airways.]

[I would never have imagined that I would ever be in this situation.]

[[Nara Narosimhan] There are challenges when you want to scale off in a particular part of the world,]

[but the key is to understand the challenges, and show you are consistent]

[with your overall culture and principles.]

[You look at an infrastructure, water, power, healthcare, transportation,]

[and what Africa needs is what we can offer them.]

[[John Butler] I definitely believe that this is a growth market and an emerging market.]

[Everyone is really working hard to make more out of their life than they've had in the past.]

[That's a good market I think for GE to be in, because if you've got people ]

[who really want to grow, expand, make things better, well, that's what GE is all about.]

[[♪lively music♪]]

[[Clara Copmarc] Leadership for me is to listen to the people. ]

[and not only the people in your team,]

[but the people where you are, understand your costumer,]

[understand the country where you are living.]

[We want to be your partner of the country, ]

[and we want to be part of the solution,]

[of every country where we are.]

[[Sarah Hedger] I think working with different people from different parts of GE, ]

[different nationalities, is actually half of why we're here.]

[If everybody has the same idea, you're never going to make much progress.]

[There's a big difference in perspectives.]

[People bring backgrounds and experience, and that helps us move forward really fast.]

[[Geoff Cuburt] It's absolutely inspiring to be a part of a complex challenge,]

[and it's absolutely inspiring to be part of a global issue.]

[We've gone to places like China and India and Russia and South America,]

[but every place has a slightly different challenge.]

[I think we're learning what those new challenges are,]

[and hopefully we'll come away with some good recommendations]

[that the company will act upon.]

[[Nara Narosimhan] If you want to succeed as an organization, you need to learn]

[ from every experience.]

[You have to be globally-minded.]

[Using my training in the classroom ]

[and translating it into something which I can practice,]

[that's been a huge professional learning for me.]
