[[Garages GE Works]]

[[Beth Comstock - Chief Marketing Officer, GE] So we're here in Austin, Texas, at the GE garage]

[which is this great popup at the South by Southwest conference]

[and we thought what a great place to remind everyone ]

[the importance of manufacturing in making things.]

[[Michael Ventura - CEO, Sub Rosa] This puts real tactile things in people's hands]

[and sort of shows them the interconnectivity between that and digital]

[in a way that I don't think has been done before.]

[[Peter Corbett - CEO, iStrategyLabs] The GE garages are so tangible and tactile.]

[When you come here, you play with a laser cutter or a MakerBot]

[you're connected back to the history of humankind. ]

[[Ken Milman - GE Garage Participant] I have a need for something. Let's try throwing it into a 3D printer,]

[let's throw it into a laser sketcher.]

[Hey, it's the possibilities that I'm excited about.]

[[Erin Willard - GE Garage Participant] We were going through the apps, and we saw the do-it-yourself GE garage.]

[It sounded really cool. It's got like the 3D printer, the laser saw,]

[and then the welding, and I was so excited for the welding so we came here.]

[[♪music♪]]

[[Haden Deaver - GE Garage Participant] My favorite thing here is definitely the 3D printer.]

[You can print out all sorts of plastic objects.]

[It blows your mind what it can do.]

[[♪music♪]]

[[Rebecca Birmingham - GE Garage Participant] We got into groups, and they asked us to create a 2-person game]

[using the electronic parts. It was really awesome when it finally worked.]

[It was pretty exhilarating.]

[[Paul Rothmen - Electronics Designer, littleBits] We're trying to kind of make electronics as easy to use]

[as cardboard or any other kind of craft.]

[[♪music♪]]

[[Beth Comstock] There's this really interesting convergence right now]

[of the ability to make things and connect it with technology,]

[and so we wanted to bring that to life for people.]

[[Dennis Crowley - CEO, Foursquare] My name is Dennis Crowley. I'm the co-founder and CEO of Foursquare.]

[We've got this fridge here, and 10 Foursquare check-ins ]

[actually pops open the door, and there's a whole bunch of beers inside.]

[We're working with the City of Austin and their bike-share program,]

[and we're welding bike racks in the back, ]

[and those are going to be going out around the city once they're all completed.]

[[♪music♪]]

[Everybody's here having a lot of fun, maybe channeling their inner kid a little bit.]

[I've learned so much, I think I might have found my passion.]

[There's so many cool things here, and I just cannot get enough of it.]

[I just want to live here now.]

[I think all you need to do is show a kid once that they can create something from nothing]

[and that sparks their mind for the rest of their life.]

[[♪music♪]]

[Manufacturing is at the heart of what we do,]

[and the ability to be here and bring it to life and let people actually work with their hands]

[and see the amazing things they can do; that's what we're here for.]
