[[Narrator] When I drive up to work in the morning I ]

[start thinking about all the things I'm going to get to do.]

[I get to work with some really smart people who can answer almost any]

[question that I have. ]

[I'm Mark Little.]

[I have the great privilege of leading GE Research. ]

[We're here in Niskayuna, New York where we've been for 100 years. ]

[We're also in Bangalore, India; Shanghai, China; and Munich, Germany. ]

[We're the focal point of technology]

[for all of GE.]

[We're working on major themes that will make the world a better place for everybody.]

[Themes like sustainable energy, early]

[healthcare, and like finding clean water solutions. ]

[Unlike in academia when you're working on great technology ]

[but have no path to market, here]

[we have great technology and a great pool of world-class resources]

[who are very well connected to GE businesses,]

[so they can take that technology and make it real]

[very, very quickly. ]

[A great example of the kind of technology we bring out is composites technology. ]

[We worked hard to develop a blade that would]

[go on the front end of an aircraft engine.]

[This is a big fan blade. ]

[That blade is made out of carbon fibers and resin,]

[and that gives us lightweight engines, and therefore]

[much more fuel-efficient engines. ]

[We're taking that same technology and making much larger,]

[much more effective wind turbine blades out of it,]

[and we're taking it into our oil and gas business to make components that will]

[help them get oil and gas out of the ocean floor that they can never reach]

[in any other way. ]

[So our job is to create new technology typically in one business first, ]

[but then to spread it across all the GE businesses. ]

[The business of research is not the business]

[of eureka moments. ]

[It's the business of planning strategic approaches to ]

[things, hard work, and patience. ]

[We have a very proud tradition here at GE Research]

[of being a part of the early days ]

[of electrical supply and lighting and ]

[first aircraft engines. ]

[We create new products and we've been doing it for about 100 years.]

[I have no doubt that we will be continuing to deliver great products and ]

[technology for the world for the next 100 years, and I'm proud to be a part of that. ]
