[Have you ever looked outside your airplane window]
[and seen buckets of rain coming down, or a snow plow, or de-icing truck,]
[and thought to yourself, "Maybe this isn't the best day to fly."]
[Well, my friends, consider this:]
[Yeah, me too--let's take a closer look, though.]
[When GE Aviation builds a new jet engine,]
[it has to pass a whole battery of intense certification tests]
[before the FAA says it's okay for you and me to fly in planes powered by that model.]
[The ingestion tests take it to the extreme for any weather condition]
[an engine might even remotely encounter during operation.]
[This water ingestion test blasts 3 tons of water per minute,]
[straight down the gullet of this brand new GEnx engine.]
[Running at high thrust, it swallows every drop]
[And when the weather gets cold, the engine faces hours of testing]
[Even if the ice builds up, the engine can still shed it ]
[through the flow path without stalling.]
[But what happens when the ice is more than a spray?]
[How about a big old hail storm?]
[Look at all this hail those crazy GE people are about to throw]
[on that poor, unsuspecting GEnx!]
[One ton in one minute--that's insane!]
[Okay, you like your hailstones on the record-breaking side?]
[Oh, yeah! Take that, you GEnx engine!]
[So do you feel a little bit better about flying in bad weather now?]
