[[We asked 15 kids and 2 GE experts what the future of flying might look like...]]

[[The GE Show presents Dreams of Flight] [children making airplane noises]]

[[Woman] What do you think airplanes are going to look like in the future?]

[[Child] One will have rockets on the wings. ]

[[Child] I think they're going to have bigger airplanes ]

[so the people there don't have to wait. ]

[They could just get on the airplane and be done with it. ]

[[Dale Carlson, GE Aviation] At the present, we don't see that airplanes are going to be]

[getting much bigger, but we are studying configurations that are called]

[blended-wing bodies.]

[[Steve Fulton, GE Aviation] The airplane might be a hundred feet wide]

[and may be 60 or 100 feet front to back. ]

[This would be like a big movie theater. ]

[[Dale Carlson] Another exciting area of investigation--]

[we all know that when you cut yourself your skin heals. ]

[Believe it or not, we're studying materials that if they get a crack in them can heal themselves. ]

[[Woman] How are planes going to be powered?]

[[Child] Blue fire. The blue fire is hotter than any other fire. ]

[[Child] Batteries. Every plane there is, you add 3 more batteries to it. ]

[[Child] They could use apple juice. ]

[[Woman] How many apples would it take to power a plane?]

[[Child] 25 million. ]

[[Woman] Where would you get that many apples?]

[[Child] You could just ask everyone if they have an apple tree. ]

[[Dale Carlson] For the apple juice idea, you can actually take any biomass ]

[and turn it into jet fuel. ]

[[Steve Fulton] Interestingly enough, one of the best sources is algae. ]

[Certain types of algae produce a lot of energy per pound, ]

[and obviously people don't eat algae, so it's not competing with food production for people. ]

[[Will planes fly to space in the future?]]

[[Child] The rockado. It's an airplane that goes in space. ]

[[Child] No, I don't think so. They don't have enough apples. ]

[[Child] I have no idea. ]

[[Child] A big balloony sausage would be the propeller. ]

[[Children speaking] [Man] Any last words about airplanes? [Child] No! [laughter]]
