[GE's always been on the cutting edge of conversion technology,]

[but quite simply- with the introduction of GE TAPS technology and the GNex engine--]

[we've changed the game when it comes to NOx emissions.]

[Although not as well known as greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide,]

[NOx--or oxides of nitrogen produced at high altitudes--can also effect climate change.]

[Aircraft are only a very minor source of the world's NOx,]

[a fraction of the leading contributors, such as cars, trucks, farm machinery, ]

[and construction equipment.]

[International regulations set standards for acceptable levels of emissions ]

[produced by aircraft during landing and takeoff, but this accounts]

[for only a small part of emissions produced during a flight.]

[En route, or cruise NOx, make up the vast majority of the total emissions.]

[Until the introduction of TAPS technology, designers focused on]

[ the regular equal altitude landing and takeoff emissions.]

[and accepted the resulting cruise emissions.]

[GE TAPS enables the designers to minimize both the low altitude emissions]

[and the high altitude cruise emissions.]

[In fact, GE TAPS reduces cruise NOx emissions by more than half. ]

[compared to the prior Best in Class combustors.]

[Also, consider this--NOx is produced in the engine's combustor ]

[when the fuel is burned at high temperatures.]

[Quite simply, the higher the temperature, the more NOx is produced.]

[Efforts to reduce the amount of fuel burned during a flight]

[have resulted in increase in temperature at the inlet to the combustor.]

[While this has reduced carbon emissions, which is good,]

[It's had an adverse effect on NOx emissions, which is bad.]

[GE TAPS technology has enabled reduction in cruise carbon emissions]

[while at the same time reducing NOx emissions--]

[the best of both worlds, as it were.]

[The secret to success of the GE TAPS combustion system]

[are the TAPS fuel air mixer and the computer controlled fuel system.]

[The fuel air mixer creates 2 different flame zones within the combustor,]

[while a controller calculates the amount of fuel and air that needs to be burned,]

[measures the temperature of air entering the combustor, then precisely controls]

[the distribution of fuel within the 2 TAPS combustion zones]

[to keep each flame just hot enough for clean burning,]

[but cool enough to prevent the production of high levels of NOx.]

[[GEnx emissions certification testing]]

[ These features quite simply revolutionize the combustion process,]

[much like the fuel injection system that we placed in traditional carburator]

[to produce much lower emissions in your car.]

[The combination of the GE TAPS combustion system--along with other technology]

[on the GEnx engine--results in one of the most advanced engines available today.]
