[[Michigan Minds: GE announces new research and development center in Motor City]]

[[V. Kemp] Throughout its history, GE has become synonymous ]

[with a single word: innovation.]

[The ideas and products the company has developed]

[range from wind turbines and incubators to holographic storage discs]

[and yes, even light bulbs.]

[The bulk of these cutting edge ideas got their start]

[at the corporation's research and development facilities,]

[which span the globe from Bangalore, India, to upstate New York.]

[Commonly referred to as Global Research Centers,]

[they house teams of engineers, scientists, and technologists]

[looking for the latest breakthroughs and scientific advancements.]

[The newest member of this innovation club]

[will be GE's Advanced Manufacturing Technology and Software Center in Michigan,]

[just outside Detroit.]

[[Mark Little - Senior Vice President and Director, GE Global Research]]

[Mark Little is the Senior Vice President and Director of GE Global Research]

[and has helped play an integral role in the pursuit of what's next]

[and what's better.]

[We have hopes to take some ideas we have today for new manufacturing processes,]

[demonstrate them large scale in Michigan,]

[and then take them out to the world.]

[A good example of this would be in composite manufacturing,]

[where we hope to use composite technologies ]

[such as we've used in aircraft engine blades today]

[to make very, very large-scale wind turbine blades.]

[We've shown today at the research center that we can do this in small scale.]

[We hope in Michigan to do this at very much larger scales,]

[so when you drive down the road five or ten years from now,]

[you will see much larger, much more effective wind turbines than we have today]

[generating electricity at much lower cost than can be achieved today.]

[[Kemp] Despite the fact the center has yet to open]

[and the manufacturing breakthroughs are still on the horizon,]

[the site has already had an important impact on the psyche of the people in Michigan.]

[This is a tough economic time for the world.]

[It's great to see that we're still investing heavily in technology,]

[and going to Michigan. We're going to create some great new jobs]

[for some really talented people.]

[[Gary Reiner - Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, GE]]

[[Kemp] Gary Reiner is the Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer at GE.]

[Michigan is also a center of manufacturing know-how,]

[and so we expect to be able to get great manufacturing technologists]

[in the state of Michigan.]

[Greg Main, a Michigan native, is the President and CEO ]

[of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation]

[which functions like a commerce department]

[and helped GE take up residence in the state.]

[[Greg Main - President and CEO, Michigan Economic Development Corporation]]

[Having GE will be a tremendous benefit for us because it will be a message]

[to the rest of the world, to the rest of the nation, that here's a Fortune 100 company]

[who thinks that Michigan is a great place to place a very significant asset.]

[...also need to get a write-up here.]

[[Main] We need the kind of boost in morale that we've received]

[and the boost in public perception ]

[because here's GE, which is one of the world's great companies,]

[deciding that they're going to make a bet on Michigan.]

[[GE - imagination at work] For GE Reports, this is Vivek Kemp.]
