[My name is Jeff Swenson.]

[I'm the Director of Regional Anesthesia and Anesthesia at the University of Utah Orthopaedic Center. ]

[[Jeff Swenson, M.D. Director, Regional Anesthesia and Anesthesia, University of Utah, Orthopaedic Center]]

[Up to 60 or 70 percent of our patients have procedures that involve ]

[significant postoperative pain. ]

[Some of our patients are so compromised from a physiologic standpoint]

[that we cannot do a general anesthetic.]

[So in both of those patient populations, it's necessary to provide either]

[postoperative pain relief using regional anesthesia, or]

[using regional anesthesia as the primary anesthetic for their surgery. ]

[With ultrasound, we've been able to ]

[achieve a 99 to 100 percent success rate]

[with blocks for this purpose. ]

[The Venue 40 allows us to perform blocks]

[painlessly and safely because heretofore we had to]

[position a needle blindly.]

[Now we can actually see the nerve]

[and position our needle in the position that we know is going to be successful. ]

[[Cathy Groos, Patient, Rotator Cuff Surgery] I'm petrified of needles, ]

[and so they had to talk me into it. ]

[Once he started there was no pain. ]

[He located it, put it in, and it was done. ]

[The nice thing about the Venue 40 is not only is it]

[quick and easy to use, but because it is so ]

[portable and because it is so accessible, whether a ]

[patient is on the floor, whether they're in the operating room, or]

[whether in the preop area, we can easily access ultrasound.]

[Whereas, in the past, when we had ]

[larger machines, it was more difficult.]

[Oftentimes we had to bring the patient to the machine.]

[This makes the ultrasound very user-friendly and it's accessible for every patient. ]

[By using ultrasound and placing peripheral nerve catheters, ]

[we're able to save an average of]

[$4000-$5000 per hospital admission ]

[for certain types of surgery where patients previously had to be]

[admitted for pain control. ]

[Now the surgery can be performed on an outpatient basis, ]

[and we can control the pain with an indwelling catheter.]

[To me it was just a lot faster recovery time.]

[I was up and going in just a couple of days using my arm. ]

[There was no pain, no extra medication.]

[In my opinion, the Venue 40 has changed regional anesthesia]

[to such a degree that we]

[would consider not performing surgery]

[if we didn't have our ultrasound machine up and running. ]
