[[male speaker] Intermountain is an integrated healthcare delivery system]

[that serves Utah and southern Idaho.]

[We have 21 hospitals.]

[Our mission is to provide better health to our community and to do it at lower cost.]

[[Dr. Charles Sorenson - President & CEO - Intermountain Healthcare]]

[[Vishal Wanchoo - President & CEO - GE Healthcare Information Technology]]

[The vehicle for transformation of this industry is information technology,]

[and what we want to try to achieve is delivery of the highest quality healthcare]

[at the lowest possible cost and make it accessible for everyone across the world.]

[[Dr. Todd Alan - Emergency Physician - Intermountain Medical Center]]

[To use information to better the care of the patient, just help standardize the baseline care,]

[the things that are not different about a patient.]

[Unnecessary variation is eliminated, costs go down, safety goes up,]

[and ultimately, the clinician can spend their time and their energy]

[really focusing on the unique aspects of that patient's care,]

[which would be a huge, huge change in medicine.]

[Intermountain has been a world leader in using clinical information systems.]

[They started back in the '70s.]

[[Sorenson] How relatively simple medicine was then.]

[The number of appropriate drugs that we learned about then was in the low hundreds.]

[Now they're in the thousands.]

[Put together with the number of different specialists]

[that might interact in the care of any individual patient,]

[it makes this so complex that no single clinician could possibly bring all that data together]

[in their brain.]

[Medical knowledge is changing very rapidly,]

[and what we can do is provide the latest and greatest information with the latest protocols]

[and really embed it into the work flow of the nurses and physicians.]

[I don't know that I have ever seen a partnership like this GE and Intermountain partnership.]

[It has the chance to produce an electronic medical record unlike anybody else]

[or any other partnership might in the world.]

[Just sharing with the patients why it makes a difference to them]

[to take their asthma controller every day.]

[Even though they might not have symptoms, you can say,]

["Here's our data. Look at the reduced chance that you'll end up in the emergency room]

[if you use that controller every day."]

[It needs to be about helping the clinician and the patient find the right decision]

[and find the right therapy for their unique presentation of that illness.]

[That's the vision that we have of bringing the data together at the point of care.]

[That patient gets the care they need when they need it,]

[how they need it, at the right cost.]

[Medicare costs nationwide can be reduced by about a third]

[if everybody in the country practiced medicine]

[the way it's practiced at Intermountain Healthcare.]

[What we're doing is in fact transformational.]

[It's really going to change healthcare delivery around the world.]
