[In Hackney, I think, like in many other inner-city areas, ]
[we have particularly high rates of very premature births.]
[We are one of two perinatal centers in Northeast London,]
[[Dr. Shahid Husain - Consultant Neonatologist]]
[and we serve a high-risk population.]
[Women with an Afro-Caribbean background, who make up a large part of our population, ]
[have particularly high rates of premature birth.]
[And a very high rate of babies that are very small when they're born,]
[and they require a specialist's care.]
[[Mr. & Mrs. Pengington Vu] Our baby was born prematurely, just short of 28 weeks.]
[It was obviously quite a surprise and a shock to us.]
[Their care starts immediately at birth. ]
[They come onto the unit from labor ward.]
[And we settle them in, put them in an incubator to ensure that they're warm enough, ]
[and that the air around them is adequately moisturized and stable.]
[The thing that kind of keeps you going every day, really, is knowing she is in great hands,]
[and the doctors and nurses have been amazing.]
[You do feel that some of the equipment is a bit older, ]
[so I think any up-to-date and contemporary equipment is always the best possible care]
[that the premature, young babies can get.]
[Here at Homerton we started a capital development program, ]
[costing about 11 million pounds, ]
[and on the neonatal unit here, we will be increasing our intensive care cots]
[from about 8 cots to 16 cots.]
[As a result of that expansion, we require equipment, ]
[and GE has made us a very generous offer.]
[And this is--for us--this is absolutely terrific, ]
[because it gives us the opportunity to do everything in an absolute state-of-the-art way.]
[It will enable us to provide everything that those babies need ]
[in terms of the ventilator, the incubator, the monitoring, and the imaging of those babies;]
[so that we can really not only look at the effects of what we're doing, ]
[but we can also help people to understand what problems ]
[there may or may not be, hopefully, for that baby in the future.]
