[We set out as a company to help solve some of the most difficult problems in the world.]

[There are few more difficult problems in the developing world]

[than access to reliable healthcare. ]

[Coming from our experience in Africa,]

[[Honduras] we've developed a program ]

[called Developing Health Globally. ]

[[Developing Health Globally-GE in Honduras]]

[[upbeat Latin American band music♫]]

[Developing Health Globally is GE's signature program]

[aimed at improving healthcare in the developing world]

[for some of the world's most vulnerable populations.]

[[ Alfredo Arguello-Exec.GM Health Trust Enterprise Clients Group: GE Healthcare]]

[We took all the lessons learned from the GE Africa piece,]

[and we translated those best practices to the Honduras project.]

[[Jesus Efrain Guvarte-Gracias Lempira Hospital speaking local dialect]]

[A series of equipment that is on the way]

[will single-handedly save mothers' and children's lives.]

[We have equipment, we have capabilities]

[[John Rice-Vice Chairman of GE; President & CEO, GE Infrastructure]]

[that can really help these hospitals save lives. ]

[We're able to take the best and brightest]

[[Krista Bauer-Director, Global Programs] of our employees,]

[of our technology, of our capabilities and help the world's most vulnerable people]

[in a very unique way.]

[[Rafael Negrete-Diagnostic Cardiology Product Manager, Latin America GE Clinical System]]

[We may not be able to change the entire world, but little by little we will.]

[First in Africa, now in Latin America, GE's Developing Health Globally program]

[is changing the developing world]

[village by village,]

[hospital by hospital.]

[GE is brining in much needed resources and expertise]

[to reverse the effects of poverty and disease,]

[and to save lives--especially the lives of newborn children.]

[Nowhere is that more evident than in Honduras.]

[And so there are still areas in the country]

[where they don't have sufficient power or water]

[[Luis Ramirez-GM, GE Energy Contractual Services] and those are the basic]

[elements needed to provide a healthcare system that's working and functional.]

[While on the one hand, they have an outstanding set of ]

[doctors and nurses, they don't have the technology to take care of their patients.]

[This is where GE comes in]

[because GE simply has exactly the types of solutions]

[that they need to resolve their healthcare issues.]

[Program leaders met with Honduran health ministers, [Addressing Critical Problems]]

[doctors and hospital administrators to discover what they needed.]

[Experts from GE's energy, water, industrial and healthcare businesses]

[address those needs head on.]

[To address these kinds of challenges,]

[GE has not only products and services like healthcare equipment]

[and energy products that produce power, ]

[we also have water systems that purify the water that's being used at the facilities.]

[We're not just only giving them updated anesthesia equipment, ]

[we're also giving them equipment for infant care in the nursery.]

[[Yurv Yaroma-Field Engineer, LSS/MIC Field Service, GE Healthcare-Americas]]

[We're giving them new equipment basically for the whole facility.]

[[Dale Hatlestad-Sales Education Mgr. Perioperative Care, Life Support/GE Healthcare.]

[Working as a team, we provide not only healthcare equipment,]

[but a total GE healthcare solution across all of the GE businesses.]

[These will help to improve not just the care provided within the operating room]

[but improve the healthcare throughout the hospital and across the region.]

[[Jesus Efrain Guvarte-Gracias Lempira Hospital] And the training that they have given]

[we wouldn't have received any other way.]

[It is an unprecedented help to this hospital.]

[GE's approach to developing better health in Honduras [Long Term Solutions]]

[--as was the case in Africa--goes far beyond donating equipment.]

[We are not only going to bring [Martha Poulter-CIO, GE Commerical Finance]]

[high-caliber technology and products to bear, ]

[but we are going to bring what is important over the long range]

[which is really the process and the people that are going to be critical to achieving]

[long term improvement in healthcare standards to the region. ]

[The way GE is going about this]

[[ Dr. Mark Veenstra, MD-Orthopedic Surgeon, Kalamazoo, MI] is that they're doing it the right way.]

[They're not only just sending equipment and saying, "Here it is."]

[They're installing the equipment. ]

[They're teaching the people here how to use the equipment]

[and that's very important.]

[But then we're going to monitor these hospitals]

[to make sure that not only is the equipment is doing what it's intended to do]

[but also to make sure that we are improving the overall healthcare]

[of the country.]

[GE's efforts in Honduras [Improved Care, Better Outcomes]]

[are having a positive effect on the quality of care delivered to people]

[in outlying clinics and hospitals]

[that have put GE's equipment, systems and expertise into practice.]

[More people are now being treated without having to be referred to other facilities.]

[Outcomes are better because doctors and nurses finally have the technology]

[they need to do what they do best.]

[[Augusto Medina-Sales Manager/Energy Services, Latin America]]

[People are very excited that a company of this magnitude like GE]

[put their eyes on this little town in the middle of nowhere for them,]

[and this has been like a blessing from them.]

[[Dr. René Fernando Aguero Ochoa-Hospital Policlinica speaking local dialect]]

[The equipment that General Electric is donating]

[will help us to better diagnose and follow up with our patients]

[whether it is an expecting mother, a child and adult or an elderly patient.]

[Thanks to General Electric, this will improve the overall patient care ]

[that the hospital can offer the patients. ]

[It's a great improvement over what was available before]

[It makes it much safer for the patients because it's up-to-date, modern equipment.]

[When we have patients that come here that are critically ill]

[to be able to not worry about power supply,]

[not getting ill from the water, is just going to improve]

[the level of care that's provided here.]

[Socrates Arturo Varela-Head of Pediatrics, Hospital La Policlinica speaking local dialect]]

[The impact of the equipment General Electric donated]

[will be seen in patient care improvements]

[as well as the improvement of the diagnosing]

[and monitoring of patients in serious condition.]

[That will have a very good projection on the quality of service at the hospital.]

[[Dan Propp, MD-Anesthesiologist] I don't think there's any way I can decribe the impact]

[that those things can have for these people.]

[It's huge.]

[That impact is felt just as much by the GE people]

[who made this project work.]

[And of course, you love it when you can do something like the Latin American project]

[and go home at night knowing that you've helped save some lives.]

[You actually have a way to changes peoples lives]

[--to change the way healthcare is being done in Honduras.]

[You have a direct impact on these people.]

[To know that we made the difference, and we saved that life]

[--it just brings tears to my eyes.]

[With the successes to date [Beyond Honduras]]

[and the lessons learned--first in Africa and now in Honduras--]

[the Developing Health Globally program will not stop here.]

[Now we have the road map on how to do it in other places]

[Then we will have credibility ]

[to go to other countries in Latin America.]

[Longer term, we hope that that translates]

[[Bob Corcoran-President & Chairman, GE Foundation; Vice President Corporate Citizenship]]

[into a sustainable development and support]

[for health in the developing world that can reach far beyond]

[a single country or even a single region.]

[Why do we do all this? Because it saves lives,]

[and it's simply the right thing to do.]

[I think this just fits right into the model of]

[GE caring for the community.]

[We have an obligation to do it because]

[we have the resources to do it.]

[We can bring our expertise, our goodwill and some investment]

[to help a population that's in need.]

[[Juliana Santis-Applications Specialist, GE Healthcare-Americas speaking local dialect]]

[This project shows us that it is an excellent company]

[because it is committed to the health and quality of life]

[of all mankind not just one specific population.]

[What this shows is that GE is willing to do the right thing]

[anywhere in the world.]

[We find that there's an opportunity for us to make a difference]

[not comercially but make a difference with our heart, with our skills, with our knowledge]

[and to give some things that help make the communities better]

[--to help bring a quality of life to some people who really need it.]
