[Nearly 16% of the US population,]

[as you all know,]

[is without health insurance and access to]

[basic health care.]

[In Michigan alone, ]

[1.7 million residents lack access to ]

[primary health care.]

[Without a source of primary care,]

[the uninsured, under insured, ]

[and the under served neighbors]

[are forced to seek care in more costly settings]

[or most of the time]

[forgo care all together.]

[At GE, we're committed to changing that. ]

[We're working hard to increase access to care,]

[improve quality of care,]

[and decrease cost relative to health care]

[around the world and in our own backyard.]

[We are incredibly proud to be part of the ]

[Greater Detroit community]

[and to call Michigan home.]

[Becoming a part of this community has]

[meant a lot of things,]

[but among the most important]

[has been the opportunity to make a difference]

[in the communities where our]

[employees live and work.]

[I'm pleased to announce today]

[that as part of GE's developing health program,]

[the GE Foundation is providing grants]

[totaling $500,000 to Detroit. ]

[The grants of $250,000 each]

[will be going to the Wellness Plan Gateway Medical Center]

[and to Community Health and Social Services, CHASS Southwest Center.]

[The people, the volunteers,]

[ultimately are going to mean more to them]

[and the community and the outreach services]

[than perhaps the dollars do.]

[These grants are part of a national multiyear ]

[$50 million program by GE Foundation]

[and the GE Diversity Council]

[to help focus on access to primary care.]

[It says that we're on the right track.]

[It says we're on the right path when a company]

[such as GE recognizes us and recognizes]

[the work that we are doing.]

[All the work that the physicians are doing]

[and the providers are doing]

[in providing the most comprehensive]

[quality care they can deliver]

[to those who need it most,]

[regardless of their ability to pay.]

[When you have a good community partner]

[such as the GE Foundation,]

[that recognizes not only the importance of the bottom line,]

[but also the importance of health ]

[and keeping our communities healthy.]

[We just need to stop and applaud]

[the GE Foundation ]

[for having this type of vision]

[and having this type of foresight. ]

[As we looked at this from the GE perspective]

[and what it is and the commitment you have]

[was one of those things that ]

[this is a long-term benefit,]

[long-term relationship]

[with GE and the community health centers]

[nationally]

[and more specifically, here in Detroit]

[to the Wellness Plan and to CHASS.]

[When many people are giving up on]

[the city of Detroit, ]

[GE is making the investment in the city.]
