[EMR is Electronic Medical Records.]
[Ours is called Centricity, and it is a technology that they use]
[in a physician's outpatient office to streamline things]
[in a way that can make you more operationally efficient, ]
[can improve the clinical quality of care you provide,]
[and at the same time, deliver better customer service.]
[I'm Christopher Crow, I am a family physician here in Plano, Texas, ]
[I'm the President of Village Health Partners.]
[I first learned about Centricity, and electronic medical records in general,]
[The benefits to the patient in this are many.]
[The one that is one of our cornerstones is access.]
[We have access to much more information that is organized,]
[and we get that information faster.]
[You can automatically give people updates on how they're doing]
[when you get their bloodwork back, or patients can give you updates]
[on what their blood pressure's doing or what their sugar is doing,]
[and you can make some minor tweaks that don't require an office visit.]
[Which again saves cost to the system; it saves cost to the patient as well.]
[I got my first report here recently, and I got it as a secure email, so I formulated an email]
[right back to Dr. Crow, and said I noticed this one measurement is at the top of the range,]
[And, if so, what should I do?]
[I thought I'd get an answer the next day, hopefully,]
[and what I found is 15 minutes later, while I was still sitting there,]
[I get a response from Dr. Crow, "No, don't worry about that, ]
[and if you want to improve it, here are the 2 things you need to do."]
[We create what's called the triangle of care.]
[The computer is actually in the middle and it helps enhance the physician/patient]
[relationship by drawing us in together to look at what is going on with the patient.]
[We get a lot more patient time as far as spending time talking to a patient or]
[seeing them in the exam room without having to actually sit there]
[The difference between paper records and electronic records, I think, is the time,]
[and I feel like this gives them the opportunity to talk and pay more attention]
[to the patient rather than flipping through paperwork.]
[I told my wife, I said, "I really feel like]
[I got my money's worth out of this doctor. ]
[Here's a written report of what it is."]
[I would say the most important competitive advantage that Centricity has]
[They have been doing it for nearly 10 years and we have 9 million lives]
[that I get to compare myself against when I use my patients and my records.]
[Only the VA has a larger database, and that commitment to that database]
[and that commitment to that clinical quality]
[absolutely transfers into a benefit to the patient.]
[If you are going to be practicing for the next 2 to 10 years, it's absolutely inevitible.]
[Technology and innovation has to take place to allow us to do more]
[of what we're already doing. ]
