Saving Gaia

One interesting episode of Channel News Asia's "Saving Gaia," an environmental documentary series that focuses on the solutions businesses, societies and the people are offering in the face of serious environmental concerns. In the clip, Colin Low, who is the GE President for Singapore, Philippines and Cambodia and Regional Executive for Growth Initiatives, ASEAN, shares how GE (General Electric) offers solutions in solving some of the worlds toughest environmental challenges, particularly on energy conservation. The GE Jenbacher plant in Ludhiana, India is featured.

[Narrator] She is a singular miracle, spinning on silently.]

[She is the giver of life.]

[Her mirth and her tears, her heart beats with ours.]

[She is mother earth. She is Gaia.]

[[Saving Gaia]]

[Fifty acres, 1,500 dairy businesses, 150,000 heads of cattle.]

[This is the Haebowal diary complex in Ludhiana, India,]

[and these are the new faces of renewable energy.]

[[♪ techno music ♪]]

[They do not spew thick smoke into the air nor spill copious amounts of crude oil]

[into the oceans,]

[but they ruminate and poop, and when they do, they give off methane,]

[a gas 21 times more harmful than carbon dioxide.]

[it's a nasty problem for the city.]

[Basically, the cow dung, it is a big problem for all the dairy owners,]

[All the roads are filled with dung.]

[You can't enter. You can't go anywhere.]

[The roads are totally damaged due to this thing because is acidic.]

[[♪ techno music ♪]]

[Every day this biomethanation plant collects 235 tons of dung from the surrounding dairies. ]

[Mixed with water, the mixture then goes through an anaerobic fermentation process,]

[whereby microbes produce bio-gas, a mix of methane and carbon dioxide.]

[This is fed into GE's Jenbacher gas engine, capable of producing 20,000 kilowatt hours ]

[of electricity per day.]

[In a year this is able to power-up 3,200 European homes. ]

[The Jenbacher bio gas engine is one of the 60 green products GE has on the market today.]

[GE has launched an ecomagination drive in 2005 to dovetail profits with going green. ]

[[Colin Lom] Well, I think at the end of the day, we're a public company.]

[Our first and foremost commitment is to our shareholders.]

[It's all about making returns for our shareholders,]

[and ecomagination is all part of the process.]

[While we're making money, we're bettering the environment.]

[Hey, we're having the cake and eating it at the same time. ]

[[Narrator] At the same time it reduces greenhouse gases in the area by 80%,]

[only requiring 500 kilowatts for it's own operation.]

[The surplus is sold to the local grid.]

[The remnants of the fermentation process are made into fertilizer and sold.]

[[Colin Lom] As the emerging economies grow, they need a lot more new products,]

[and a lot more new investments in terms of bettering the lives of the people]

[ in their own country.]

[And we see huge explosive growth in terms of the world's population.]

[This is all creating a big impact on the limited resources that planet earth has. ]

[[Narrator] And that's exactly where ecomagination comes into play.]

[An initiative to help companies find green solutions, GE decided to invest]

[more than $1 billion U.S. dollars on cleaner technology research ]

[and development for 2007.]

[PR Ploy, or bottom-line driven, or good old-fashioned ethics,]

[there's a green awakening among businesses today, and that's all that matters.]

[And since corporations are some of the largest environmental culprits,]

[it's a start to letting Gaia breath easy again.]
