[I'm the global technology leader for power conversion at GE's research operations.]
[A Smart Grid -- the first thing that it allows us to do is to squeeze performance]
[out of the infrastructure that we have.]
[If you look at the world today, the grid has automation platforms,]
[and it has sensing platforms.]
[A smarter grid is one that has a lot more smart meters that allow two-way communication]
[between homes and utilities that brings the ability for people to participate]
[in demand-response program, people to provide power from solar energy]
[back to the grid with integration of plug-in hybrids, battery energy storage,]
[smart appliances, we're starting to deploy this extra intelligence,]
[this extra communication capability that is going to bring on these advantages.]
[That's really what Smart Grid is about.]
[I work in the ecodashboard project here in the Smart Grid lab.]
[So now, because you have a smart home with smart appliances, ]
[you can control your appliances from just about anywhere.]
[I think that you can do it from a website, your home computer, ]
[So, say you left the home to go on a trip, and you forgot to turn off the lights]
[You could through a mobile device, just go to your home's energy settings]
[and turn off that appliance, for example, a light.]
[You really don't have to buy all new appliances.]
[I think just retrofit, if you will, the current loads I have with smart plugs.]

[a nice web-based tool, look at the information, and be able to make changes]
[in your lifestyle, your energy usage.]
[It's a real collaborative effort.]
[Companies like GE, Cisco, Silver Spring Networks, but more importantly,]
[partnerships with our customers and our community leaders.]
