[[Ken Grant] What would the world look like if we continue to increase electric demand]
[at the rate we have been for the last 10 years?]
[With the environmental issues and with the volatility of fuel prices,]
[we're going to have to work from the customer side to solve a lot of these problems.]
[ They have to understand how it is going to improve their lives]
[and how it's going to help them be a part of the solution.]
[Smart Grid had the potential to change the relationship that we have with our customers.]
[[Lawson Russell] It's one thing to go out and look at the meter and watch it spin]
[It's something else to watch the dollar signs spin inside your house.]
[[Sherry Russell] It was interesting to me to be able to see on that little display]
[[Lawrence Russell] One thing that happened too, is our grandkids got involved.]
[As we watched the dollars click by, they started paying attention, as well.]
[When do I spend the most money?]
[[Sherry Russell] It showed us that on the weekends that power is cheaper,]
[so that made a big difference.]
[[Lawrence Russell] We started working with GE to better understand ]
[We're using the GE's Smart meters in our project.]
[We have 6,600 meters deployed in the field that allows communication]
[between the meters and into the home.]
[[Rick Green] The meter we're looking at here is technology that has been built on]
[But the new GE Smart meter brings us into a new evolution of metering.]
[Having this network system, we can get the reads remotely]
[without sending anybody out to the meter. ]
[The register on the meter actually shows a consumption register ]
[that gives the customer information inside the home.]
[[Sean Patterson] I was spending almost $200 a month for electric for a 2-bedroom apartment.]
[That last bill I paid which was last month was $97.]
[[Casie Patterson] Are you serious? Cool. That's a hundred bucks we saved.]
[[Sean Patterson] I actually could see how much money was being spent a day.]
[We were able to adjust how the air conditioner was ran, start turning more lights off.]
[I never even thought about it.]
[I'm just "Turn the air conditioner on."]
[[Casie Patterson] Yeah, that's what I was going to say -- I never really thought about it.]
[And even just little simple stuff like unplugging the toaster]
[because that actually sucks -- we didn't know that either -- ]
[it sucks power out even though you're not using it.]
[I think that's the good thing about it, it makes you pay attention.]
[[Carl Johnson] You can use your current generating capacity .]
[ It's better for the environment. It's better for the customers]
[and it's the cheapest way to go.]
[[Chris Greenwell] Yesterday, we sent a customer a bill.]
[Now, we give the customer tools to make intelligent choices.]
[That is really powerful when people can understand that there is really ]
