[It's obviously just an unbelievably exciting time to be working in education]

[for a multitude of reasons.]

[We have a President that is just absolutely passionate about this,]

[and, it's amazing to me, fighting the toughest economy since the Depression,]

[fighting two wars, day after day, week after week,]

[he just keeps coming back to education, keeps coming back to education.]

[And I was lucky enough to work with him for a long period of time in Chicago,]

[when he was first in the state legislature and then when he became a U.S. Senator,]

[and this is simply a passion of his.]

[So many issues are like an intellectual one.]

[This comes from his head, but it comes from his heart as well.]

[There's always been a theme of these partnerships for 5 years, ]

[and I really appreciate GE's leadership on this, but I think, frankly,]

[that this has nothing to do with money--that in too many places,]

[adult dysfunction hurts children.]

[I think education is a lot like families, that when parents fight, when adults fight,]

[children lose, and money is not going to solve that problem.]

[So, if we can take the money issue off the table, if we can summon the political will, ]

[and if you guys can continue to have those hard conversations]

[and challenge each other, and move outside your comfort zones,]

[and build the kind of collaborative leadership that is the focus of this conference,]

[I think we have a chance to transform education in this country.]

[It's a remarkable, remarkable time,]

[and I'm going to continue to look to districts like yours]

[to show the country where we need to go.]
