[With help from GE and the GE Foundation, International Medical Corps has received]

[critical medical equipment for use in its humanitarian relief efforts in Chad.]

[Ibrahim Mansaray, International Medical Corps' Logistics Officer in Chad, ]

[discusses the challenges of moving the equipment across Chad, and why it's all worth it.]

[The hardest part was]

[actually getting the shipment from the airport.]

[It took us almost three weeks to have them cleared.]

[Partly because of the late arrival of the second consignment.]

[There were also rumors]

[of forcible rebel incursions into the city.]

[That created a very big panic]

[in regards to all NGOs that were trying to get]

[every shipment of theirs from the same airport.]

[Eventually, we managed to clear the cargo on the 7th of May,]

[and then, we loaded the cargo on a truck from the airport]

[because there were also rumors of rebel movement]

[in the east of Chad where we were]

[supposed to transfer the shipment.]

[It was impossible to make immediate]

[transport of the cargo from N'Djamena.]

[So, we stored it in N'Djamena until the 27th of May,]

[and when we heard that the roads were secured,]

[we could transport our cargo to Abéché.]

[From N`Djamena to Abéché is about 978 kilometers.]

[The road is very terrible.]

[It is a dirty road with terrible terrain.]

[Our trip took three days, arriving in Abéché]

[on the 30th of May, 2009.]

[When the equipment arrived, we contacted]

[UNHCR, and we had assistance in offloading.]

[They gave us their forklift.]

[We offloaded the equipment in less than one hour.]

[The consignment for Abéché was shipped]

[down to the hospital, and for Guereda hospital,]

[we again hired a truck.]

[From Abéché to Guereda, it`s about 176 kilometers.]

[In Guereda it was difficult because we never had a forklift.]

[So, we had to hire a big labor force,]

[but we managed to offload it with no problem.]

[At the end of the day, I was very happy ]

[because we are able to achieve bringing the equipment here,]

[and following training, people are going to benefit from it.]

[Thank you very much. [Building Healthy Futures-International Medical Corps]]
