[[Funding Change: GE Foundation Enabling Changes to NYC School System]]

[[Vinek Kemp] Earlier this month in a Harlem middle school,]

[GE and New York City's school's chancellor announced a new program ]

[which will pump up to $250,000]

[into 55 of the cities most deserving middle schools.]

[The idea is to bring systematic change to a system of schools]

[that have, in the past, ]

[failed to meet the most basic educational needs.]

[Sharon Weissbrot is the Principal of MS 326,]

[one of the schools receiving the foundation money,]

[and plans on using the cash to enrich math, science, ]

[and technology studies in her school. ]

[[Sharon Weissbrot, Principal, MS 326] If you don't have an idea of where you are going and you don't have a map,]

[you're just not going to get there and you will drop out]

[and that's more of a burden for society than we realize.]

[Many of these kids are dropping out in 7th grade, 8th grade, 9th grade.]

[We know that if a child's in 6th grade,]

[has attendance below 80%,]

[and fails one or two majors, ]

[the odds are that that child will be out of school by the time he's in 10th grade.]

[But when you have an organization ]

[that's there to put money behind a school,]

[to work with parents to get everyone together on the same page, ]

[to make sure the children strive and achieve their dreams, and achieve their potential,]

[the world just opens up, there's no two ways about it.]

[[Vinek Kemp] The philanthropic branch of GE--]

[the GE Foundation--will fund 17 of the one-year grants.]

[[Bob Corcoran, President, GE Foundation] [Vinek Kemp] Bob Corcoran is the President of the foundation. ]

[It's a wonderful program that's part of our Developing Futures in Education Program,]

[that really is bringing money to focus on math and science education,]

[but more importantly, it leads to student achievement ]

[in math and science in the middle schools.]

[[Vinek Kemp] The initiative has even peaked the attention of Washington.]

[New York Congressman, Charles Rangel, attended the event,]

[insisting that education is the touchstone of the nation's strength.]

[[Charles Rangel] In this Country, what makes the difference regardless of what your color is,]

[is the ability to achieve those dreams,]

[and you just can't do it without education.]
